Commercial Description:
Dunkelweizen is a beer partially left unfiltered, this allows for the essence of the yeast to remain prominent thus giving it a cloudy appearance. Yeast is a strong character in this style of brew. Highly effervescent hints of banana, clove, bubblegum, and even apple can be detected from the yeast used. The body of the ale is usually amber to dark brown. It possesses a stronger malt character then the lighter Hefeweizen, with toasted flavors and a slight spiciness throughout -- you might even notice a raisin hint. The presence of so much wheat also contributes to strong ‘head’ retention and a slight tartness. Hops are not dominant in this style to off set any sweetness since there is so much personality in the yeast strain. Bitterness is at a minimum, with virtually no aroma or flavor from the addition of hops. While the base recipe was developed by the team of Legend brewers; brewer Alex Coppola specifically honed this particular recipe after weeks of over-analysis and a highly critical eye. He volunteered his services due to his “expert” credentials, which basically relies on the fact that German wheat beers are his favorite style. So after years of sampling all Germany has to offer, he embarked on this great brewing adventure. This beer’s profile stands strong, very complex from start to finish and definitely not boring -- kind of like sitting next to someone with a multiple personality disorder aboard a cross-country bus trip… and they have the window seat.

Has a nice sweet banana yeast flavor that ties in nicely with rich malts and chocolate. The combination makes for a very intriguing and delicious beer. Legend rocks.

Hazy reddidh-brown body topped by a creamy but not too large manila head. Slippery head that does not lace much. The aroma is loaded with bananas and and sort of generic sweetness. As it warms I pick up a bit of nutty wheat but none of the chocolate that has been previously mentioned. The flavor is very much like banana nut bread. Loads of banana ethers and a nutty sweetness. Medium slimy mouth-feel, typical of the style. Very quaffable and nice summer seasonal.

Cloudy brown with a thick off-white head. Aroma of banana and clove. Flavor has notes of caramel, yeast, wheat, banana/clove, toasted malt and a touch of chocolate. Pleasantly sweet, not much bitterness. Medium body, smooth texture and moderate carbonation. Not much lacing on the glass but good head retention. Overall, solid stuff.

Amber-brown in the glass. Good head and good lacing. Aromas yield cloves, some banana, and mild chocolaty malt notes. Tasting includes all of the above, with the addition of a tart cherry fruitiness. Palate is full and dark. The toasted chocolate finish lingers a good while. Mouthfeel is a little thin. Overall, a delicate dunkel with a nice balance of yeast and wheat over on the dark side of hefes.

Hazy copper-brown. Nice nose, very wheaty, banana, clove, and sweetness, vaguely floral. Flavor is full of yeastiness, plenty of banana and clove, light roasts give a chocolate depth to it that sticks around nicely.

Pours a hazy rusty brown with a large head that fades to a medium head with thick lacing. Aroma is of banana, clove, grassy hop, mild biscuit, mild chocolate. Flavor is banana, chocolate, mild biscuit, slight clove, slight hay. Solid fairly full flavored dunkelwiezen. Nice balance between the malt and fruit and clove. Aftertaste is very nice a full where the chocolate and caramel come up a bit and is longer then in most dunkelwiezens.

Cloudy cranberry-brown body, thin white, quarter-inch of white foam atop. Smell is banana, latex paint, light coffee/chocolate roastedness. Taste is sweet pit fruit, drying soda water, beef jerkey, soy sauce, tobacco and a slight coffee/metallic hop burn in finish. Could be a lot better. This is not one of my favorites from Legend.

One of my favorite things about Legend is the constant flow of seasonal experiments that flow out of the brewery. Recently they have been running them out two at a time, which is just fantastic. I wasn’t expecting much here based on their first attempt at a hefe, but got a pleasant surprise. Poured a coppery amber, with a nice tan head, to style. Nice aroma of clove and banana. Flavor is an ester laden festival of yeastiness, initially of almost pure banana, but moving more into clove as it warms. A definite spiciness as well, this is rather delectable. If I was a bigger banana fan, this would get a significantly higher rating. Could have had more malt presence as well, just to be picky.
