Commercial Description:
Legend Brown Ale has been our most popular beer for eleven years running, so you might ask why we would feel compelled to make a different interpretation of the style. Our answer to that would be that Imperial Brown Ale is a different style altogether. “Imperial” in the beer world describes a beer that is simply BIGGER than the traditional style … Imperial Stout, Imperial IPA (ours will be out late Summer). These are ramped-up versions of the original style containing more malt, more hops, more alcohol, more flavor. Legend Imperial Brown has an intense malt background including seven types of malt for a huge, rich backbone. Look for flavors of caramel, chocolate and coffee, backed up by dark fruit (raisin, currant). Overall undercurrents of bready, biscuit flavors last from start to finish. Malt is nothing without hops and this beer offers a pretty serious hop balance in flavor and aroma. The bittering hop is Perle, a solid, British style. This is accompanied by Ahtanum for the mid to late boil hop for a little floral-citrus character. The whole thing is then dry hopped on Fuggles (30 days) for a nice combination of British and American hop influence. In short, expect a big, brown, chewy beer. 45 IBU, Fermented on Legend house ale yeast, sipped on randomly by the brewers for quality control.

22 oz bottle. Dark cola with a thin wash of head. Grapey prunes in the nose with red licorice. Malty molasses with spicy vinous touches and weak coffee. Becomes sour, somewhat dry; faint pumpernickel. Tingly carb, medium light.

Pour is very dark almost black except when it is held to the light. The head is a thin layer of dark tan tiny bubbles. This looks like a really nice stout. Aroma is very nice coming from the big brandy snifter. Big nuttyness and lots of caramel malt. The flavor is more caramel rounded out by the nutty character of a quality brown ale (my opinion). The body is actually quite sharp initially due to some serious carbonation, but it quickly smooths out as I roll it around in my mouth. The finish is a little sticky. Exactly what I would expect from something calling itself an "imperial brown". Well done.

Dark brown color. Smell of molasses, chocolate, malt and cinamon. Tastes of hops, roasted coffee and a Asti dry bitterness. After half the glass, there is a sourness to it.

Pours dark brown with medium size, light-brownish head. Aroma of fresh sweet strawberry-raspberry-pear. As hit first hits your tongue it taste strongly of chocolate, then slightly fruity, slightly sour, and finishing creamy, bitter with a hint of alcohol. Dry and light bodied. Very good.

Aroma was pleasant enough with hints of chocolate, burnt coffee, and sugar daddies, but whoa, there was a very strong harsh sour and bitter taste that seemed to override anything the malts used were trying to accomplish. Got to be where it became somewhat drinkable, but smooth it definetely wasn’t

Thanks to hopdog for this... Appears a rich brown with a red hue. A small tan head quickly fades into a small cap. Tiny remnants of lacing are left around the glass. Smell is of toffee, caramel, mild sourness, and earth notes. Taste is of the same aromas with mild sour cherries buried behind the flavors. I’m not sure if that’s good and I’m not sure why we keep having this problem with the Legend brews. Steve said he put this one in the fridge as soon as he received it so who knows? Mouthfeel is medium bodied, sweet up front that fades into a quick tartness. --update 9/11/07 appears a dark chestnut with a milky, tan head that slowly fades into a batter-like cap and collar. Smell is of hoppy grapefruit, grassy, earthy, and herbal with notes of fresh grain. Taste is of the mentioned aromas with a decent balance. Notes of black tea and rye shine through. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly astringent, along with caramel sweetness, cocoa, toffee, malts, and a decent amount of hops. Previous scores: Ar- 7 Ap - 3 F - 6 P - 3 O - 14

22oz bottle acquired in trade with The_Beer_God (thanks!). Poured a medium and cloudy brownish color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, roast, chocolate, and toffee. What’s with the Legend sourness (this bottle is not that old and stored in my fridge)? Had that ’patented’ Legend cherry sourness. Some caramel, and hoppiness in the tastes as well. I enjoyed the aroma on this one.

Thanks to hopdog. Pours a hazy orange brown with an average tan head. Aroma of caramel, nuts, chocolate, toffee and toasty malt. Flavor of caramel, sour, some bitter hop bite, roasted malt, coffee in the aftertaste.
