Commercial Description:
Legend Brown Ale has been our most popular beer for eleven years running, so you might ask why we would feel compelled to make a different interpretation of the style. Our answer to that would be that Imperial Brown Ale is a different style altogether. “Imperial” in the beer world describes a beer that is simply BIGGER than the traditional style … Imperial Stout, Imperial IPA (ours will be out late Summer). These are ramped-up versions of the original style containing more malt, more hops, more alcohol, more flavor. Legend Imperial Brown has an intense malt background including seven types of malt for a huge, rich backbone. Look for flavors of caramel, chocolate and coffee, backed up by dark fruit (raisin, currant). Overall undercurrents of bready, biscuit flavors last from start to finish. Malt is nothing without hops and this beer offers a pretty serious hop balance in flavor and aroma. The bittering hop is Perle, a solid, British style. This is accompanied by Ahtanum for the mid to late boil hop for a little floral-citrus character. The whole thing is then dry hopped on Fuggles (30 days) for a nice combination of British and American hop influence. In short, expect a big, brown, chewy beer. 45 IBU, Fermented on Legend house ale yeast, sipped on randomly by the brewers for quality control.

bottle courtesy of hopdog, looks real nice, a solid mahogany color, nice sweet fruity and caramel aroma, thin ring of white foam. flavor is very hoppy up front, then a bit of caramel, then a sour finish. the aftertaste lingers with the sour flavor. the bottle was fresh so i cant imagine an infection, so i guess it was supposed to be this way.

At the Heavyweight Open House. This is a pretty tart beer, even with a strong maltiness and nuttiness. There was no indication that the alcohol was this high at 8%. Yeasty.

Poured a clear reddish brown color. Caramel malt started the aroma but then a tart lactic aroma took over. It smelled like vinegar and sweaty feet. The flavor started tart then went to caramel then tart then caramel. Light bitterness on the semi-dry finish. Light to medium body.

Bottle. Nose of fruity chocolate and caramel, and some dark fruits. Nearly opaque brown with foamy tan head: good lacing. Sweet-bread malty backbone, almost a tad grainy, with sweet date and raisin flavors. Just enough hops in the end. Touch of warmth, but not too big for 8%. But still, this beer is full in mouthfeel and flavor, and complex. Great.

Dark brown, almost opaque. Fizzy tan head. Aroma is caramel, butterscotch, and good hop presence., mainly in the form of floral notes. The flavor is not overly caramel sweetness as I had feared it would be, Drinks much smaller than 8%. The butterscotch character that is the hallmark of a Legend brew is subdued in this one. The bitterness works really well in ths one. Nice crisp medium-full body. I am not a big fan of brown ales but if they were more like this I would be.

22 oz. bottle. A very deep brown pour with a thick mocha head. Smells like a candy bar with lots of milk chocolate, caramel and nuts. Some vanilla cream, coffee, butterscotch and sourness in there too. Medium to full-bodied and a little sticky. Caramel and toasty malts start things off. Molasses and nuts follow and transition to some hops and raisins. A good bit of warming alcohol and candied sugar in the finish. If this had been classified as a brown ale, I would’ve said that it’s the best I’ve had.

I really like this beer. Tastes like their brown ale, just super hopped up. The rich chocolatey malts go very nicely with the bitter finish.
