Commercial Description:
Legend Brown Ale has been our most popular beer for eleven years running, so you might ask why we would feel compelled to make a different interpretation of the style. Our answer to that would be that Imperial Brown Ale is a different style altogether. “Imperial” in the beer world describes a beer that is simply BIGGER than the traditional style … Imperial Stout, Imperial IPA (ours will be out late Summer). These are ramped-up versions of the original style containing more malt, more hops, more alcohol, more flavor. Legend Imperial Brown has an intense malt background including seven types of malt for a huge, rich backbone. Look for flavors of caramel, chocolate and coffee, backed up by dark fruit (raisin, currant). Overall undercurrents of bready, biscuit flavors last from start to finish. Malt is nothing without hops and this beer offers a pretty serious hop balance in flavor and aroma. The bittering hop is Perle, a solid, British style. This is accompanied by Ahtanum for the mid to late boil hop for a little floral-citrus character. The whole thing is then dry hopped on Fuggles (30 days) for a nice combination of British and American hop influence. In short, expect a big, brown, chewy beer. 45 IBU, Fermented on Legend house ale yeast, sipped on randomly by the brewers for quality control.

(draft) Clear dark red-brown body with healthy tan head, nice lacing. Aroma is medium sweet, grapefruit/herbal, caramel, some yeasty sourness. Taste is medium sweet, a cool caramel (not sweet), grapefruit/herbal, the irrepressible Legend house yeast, light chocolate. Not sure why, but the finish evokes chili pepper even though there is no spiciness. Medium-full body, smooth light chalkiness. Stronger hop than malt profile, which is a bit of a surprise given the whole Brown Ale thing. Like the IIPA, the IBA takes an unusual route in large part due to the unusual house yeast characteristic. Really unusual, I daresay unique -- I enjoyed it but cannot say I loved it.

LCRBM2. Hazy brown, lasting beige head. Lovely aroma of malt. Rich malt in mouth and then a malty finish. Intense brown malty beer, nice if a bit one dimensional.

LCRBM2: Chocolate cake dough in the aroma. Chocolate and cascade hops in the flavor. Earthy hoppy aftertaste. Slightly alcoholic and slightly unbalanced.

22oz bottle acquired in trade with The_Beer_God (thanks!). Poured a medium and cloudy brownish color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, roast, chocolate, and toffee. What’s with the Legend sourness (this bottle is not that old and stored in my fridge)? Had that ’patented’ Legend cherry sourness. Some caramel, and hoppiness in the tastes as well. I enjoyed the aroma on this one.

Bottle... Clear, very dark, crimson ale with a small, creamy, khaki head. Butterscotch and chocolate in the aroma. Cocoa butter in the nose and flavor. Leans a bit on the sweet, malty side of balance... but it’s a brown and I dig a malty ale, so I count this as a benefit. Full-bodied and creamy with lively carbonation. Finishes lightly bitter and a touch roasty. Great beer!

Bottle sampled in June 2006, courtesy of Numenor: Pours a transparent brown with a thin-lacing light tan head. Aroma has distinct sauerkraut notes with some sweet toasty dark caramel malt and a touch of diacetyl. Body starts with a lightly sweet toasty brown maltiness and a hint of tartness before a bittersweet, lightly fruity finish. Something is definitely off here...
