Café Mocha, caramel, toffee, dried fruit, anise, and more waft up to the nose. Creamy and smooth on the palate and full bodied. The flavor was rich and rewarding with the emphasis on the coffolate. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 30, 2006 Bottle at Friday Night Hampton Party: Opaque with a huge creamy head and outstanding lace. The aroma has notes of pine, grapefruit, plum, mocha, aromatic pipe tobacco, molasses, and some Diacetyl esters.
The taste is first sweet and malty with lots of caramel, toffee, chocolate followed by a piney and citric twang. Supported by some smoke and black malt. A light bit pepper before the bittersweet aftertaste. The feel has some bite and then smooths out to an oily and lush body.
A nice hoppy stout, I liked it and would give it a try again. jasonp (1510), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 23, 2006 Pours very dark brown/black with a thick light brown head. Aroma of mocha, malted milk balls, floral hops and slight sourness. Flavor has a huge presence of caramel, roasted malt, coffee, mocha, rich dark chocolate, grapefruit, plum, raisin, PINE/GRAPEFRUIT-Y hops and notes of lactic sourness, tobacco, wood and whiskey. Pretty complex. Perfect level of sweetness balanced by ample bitterness coming from the acre of Tomahawk hops and a ton of roasted/black malts. Bitterness lingers forever in a good way. Very full, thick and lush on the palate with moderate carbonation. Great head retention. Excellent! OhioDad (2491), Hilliard, Ohio, USA

Aroma is of roasted malts, raisins, molasses, and some baker’s chocolate. Flavor is nice roasted and even burnt malts, some coffee, licorice, baker’s chocolate, and molasses. Some pine hops can be found as well on the finish. Amazingly smooth palate and creamy mouthfeel. This was a delicious Imperial Stout and one that I’m glad I got the chance to try! The aroma is quite sharp and features raisin, burnt malt and gobs of strong black licorice. There are mild strong chemical notes that are best described as bitter, but they have a mild sweet note as well. I’m assuming this aroma comes from the Tomahawk hops used in the beer. The body is deep black and supports a tan head that is equal parts creamy and bubbly. The head started off two fingers thick, but settled into a thumb thick affair that left excellent lacing. The fore is full of the black licorice noted in the aroma. It is also quite burnt tasting from the malt and there are very mild chocolate notes, but no coffee. The flavor profile here is very different than most Imperials I have had of late. An intense bittersweet finish that screams with those unusually flavored Tomahawk hops continues the parallel of the flavor matching the aroma. This is a breath of fresh air just by being so different flavor wise from everything else. I personally like black licorice so that element also earns points for the beer. The Oatmeal used in the malt bill adds smoothness, but overall the beer could stand a little more thickness. Still this is a beer worth seeking. Numenor (869), Richmond, Virginia, USA

Great thick body, almost cream like. Pine, coffee flavors dominate. Light carbonation due to the cask nature. maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA

Aroma and flavor are dominated by strong, bitter, black coffee. Here is my disclaimer: I can’t stand coffee. Really wasn’t anything else going on, or I really couldn’t get past all the coffee.
