Commercial Description:
If beer is liquid bread, then this is a meal in a glass! A big, black, monster of a beer the color of used motor oil that tastes like a food fight in your mouth. This is actually an Imperial Oatmeal Stout, as nearly 25% of the mash consisted of flaked oats, producing a thick, silky smoothness. Pale Ale Malt is the base for this brew, with Chocolate Malt, Roasted Barley, and Black Barley (all in generous amounts). Tomahawk hops are used exclusively during the boil and for dry hopping. Expect a thick, heavy brew with intense dark malt flavors and a sharp, piney hop character.

Courtesy of arcdz. Black with a small tan head. Roasty, chocolate nose with licorice, burnt malt and coffee. The flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter and a bit thin with chocolate, molasses and dark fruits; Full body is a bit thin with light carbonation.

22 oz bottle from Harris Teeter in Charlottesville. Pours dark, dark brown, appears thick and black in the glass. Dark brown head sticks around awhile. Aroma is pure, overwhelming caramel. I liked it after a bit, but it was a bit shocking at first. Taste of caramel, hops, anise, vanilla, brown sugar. This is a bold beer, and very tasty. One of Legend’s best.

22 oz. bottle on 2/16/2008, shared with my 2 brothers. Brown/black body under a large brown head with some good lace and durability. Espresso, dark chocolate, licorice, pine aromas. Medium/full body, light carbonation, lacks some of the roundness and fullness that I prefer in the mouthfeel, although it does have a pleasing smoothness. Dark malt flavors, treacle, brown sugar all contribute, and a softly dry, but not assertive, finish.

In short: Burnt malts and pickles. WTF? (bad bottle?)
How: Tasting session with Montreal crew
The look: Black body with a little tan ring of foam
In long: Weird nose of cattail and marinade. Sign of infection with distant vinegar. Watery roastiness with burnt toasts and burnt cereals in water. Some cabbage and little rubber. Adequate mouthfeel and soft carbonation. The good thing is that it wasn’t very tasty and with all these off flavours that’s a good thing. I’ve heard this was a nice Imperial Stout, but it’s just a Legend.

(Rating #1460)

My Bottom Line:
Pickled oils swerve around the thick, bountiful mouthfeel of this Imperial Stout, undermining its salient roastiness, dark chocolate and vanilla maltiness.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the pitch black.
-Its nose is rather atrocious; an obvious sign of a dismaying future. Either I am extremely unlucky with Legend bottles, or these guys often have bottling issues.
-The slow carbonation lets the malts express themselves eloquently.
-That pickled nastiness sometimes puts on olive oil clothing.

Bottle.

22 oz bottle, cellared a year. Dark brown with a tan head. Nose of coffee, licorice and tea. Bitter lemon soda with a shot of espresso. Touches of dark chocolate and vanilla. Likely better fresh.
