Commercial Description:
If beer is liquid bread, then this is a meal in a glass! A big, black, monster of a beer the color of used motor oil that tastes like a food fight in your mouth. This is actually an Imperial Oatmeal Stout, as nearly 25% of the mash consisted of flaked oats, producing a thick, silky smoothness. Pale Ale Malt is the base for this brew, with Chocolate Malt, Roasted Barley, and Black Barley (all in generous amounts). Tomahawk hops are used exclusively during the boil and for dry hopping. Expect a thick, heavy brew with intense dark malt flavors and a sharp, piney hop character.

Black with big, foamy cappuccino head / Oats and tobacco nose with odd chemical note? / Medium body, a bit watery, with good, dry finish / Pronounced flavors of tobacco, oatmeal, and bitter coffee / Enjoyable, and interesting flavor profile, but needs a little more body.

moderate alc for an imperial stout makes it smoother than most. Pours like old strong coffee with a nice frothy big head. Nice combo of chocolate, coffee and roasted malts and oatmeal sweetness. Moderate hop presence

pitch black with thick tan head. very smooth texture that has some creaminess. flavor is largely of roasted malt with a hint of chocolate and a strong fresh hop component throughout. the beer is very flavorful, but the flavors run together and are ill-defined. a solid imperial stout but nothing spectacular

22oz. Pours pretty typical imperial stout, black with a creamy tan head. Surprising amount of carbonation that you see coming up the side of the glass. Extremely aromatic, this is the selling point for me. Mostly caramel in the nose, a bit of sour mash follows it up. The actual taste is somewhat forgetable, but more caramel backed up by some roasted malt. Fairly drinkable for an Imperial Stout (see notes about carbonation) Where are the hops? Good effort from Richmond.

22. Thanks, 46er3498! Pours black with a thick, towering, creamy, moussy dark tan (almost burnt orange) head. Lots of swiss cheese holes in the head as it falls, which it eventually does to leave a thin moussy tan film and plenty of webs and sheets of lace. Nice thick dense creamy chocolate on the nose. Dense, creamy, almost chalky body with very little carb. This one has a few miles on it by now, relatively speaking for a release from probably this year, and it’s showing some real smoothness--that sharp piney character the brewer describes...well, it really isn’t there in any huge amount. There is a nice dark roasty flavor keeping the chocolate company on the mid-palate, but it’s rather one-sided. Clean, slightly chalky finish. Good stuff. Borderline great.

Bottle; poured a dark brown/black with a medium to large sized brown head. Aroma was really good; chocolate, dark fruit, roasted malt, buttered bead, and some milky sourness. I was surprised by the flavor; it was just all over the place and dominated by that lactic sourness. I think I got a bad batch of this; at least I hope I did because I have really enjoyed Legend’s beers to date. I’ll look to rerate this one in the future.

Extremely dark with a beautiful milk chocolate head. This is a classic, even thought I’m a littel partial because its a VA beer right down the road. This beer has a little creaminess to it, but its mostly all muscle. Massive bitter chocolate flavor with a burnt coffe after taste. The alcohol is subdued, but after I finish all 22 oz I figure I will know its in there. One of the best Legend brews that I have had, and they hit the mark with this one.
