Smooth, salty and alittle boring but not unpleasant. Slight piny hop smell. Alittle thin for my taste. Like it but much rather have spaten optimator pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Mar 15, 2007 Pours a ruddy brown with high level of clarity and a rather thin offwhite head. The nose is a bit off putting. Nutty and toasty with a bit of cardboard. Not much in the way of malty sweetness but there’s a hint of hops and some light fruit, perhaps strawberry. The mouthfeel is a bit thin for the style, or most any style, in my opinion, thought hte carbonation level is apparently appropriate. The flavors are about on par with the nose, though perhaps a half shade more impressive. There’s a bit of malt sweetness, but the toasty nutty points come out so much stronger and the hops are just as absent. The balance in this brew comes from not pushing too much flavor into any single element of this brew. No big malty spine. No hops. The light chocolate to caramel malt sweetness is offset by the toastiness of the malt. A weird fruity cardboard aftertaste. This isn’t undrinkable, but it is the least impressive doppelbock I remember drinking. CigarsLoveBeer (153), Illinois, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 1/5 | 13/20 | Mar 14, 2007 Bottle: Amber body (light for style) with average head. Malty aroma with lots of cherry notes. Also noted wood sherry and tobacco. So far, better than expected... Weak molasses flavors start this beer with hints of charcoal. A grape like flavor appears after the swallow. Not bad flavor, I guess, but underwhelming. Same could be said for the body, very weak, and the low alcohol for the style really shows. xav33 (313), Midland, MI, Michigan, USA

12 oz bottle
Recent bottling, butted into 02/07
Medium pour in an English pint
Poured a clear ruddy brown with a large light brown frothy mostly diminishing head with fair lacing.
Smelt of moderate to strong toffee and roasted grain and molasses with light caramel, figs and raisins.
Taste was upfront moderate sweet molasses, raisins and licorice followed by a moderate bitter roasted grain and sweet licorice cola and caramel on a short finish.
Palate was light bodied, slightly oily and lively carbonated.
Overall, a light American introduction to the taste of the style, but grows bland quickly. goldtwins (4081), Nesconset, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 9, 2007 Poured a clear dark golden amber color with small creamy beige head. The aroma was full of malt. Very nice with caramel, fruits and raisins. The flavor was sweet and fruity with a caramel base. The flavor dries out just enough on the finish to give a great balance and drinkability. Medium bodied jellybeanriot (27), Columbia, Missouri, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Mar 6, 2007 Aroma is kind of stale and sour, but toasty, with hints of burnt caramel/chocolate. Flavor is ok, kind of one-dimensional, malty, alcohol in the finish. Palate is thin, inappropriate for the style. An ok beer, but nothing to write home about. shigadeyo (2263), Harrison, Ohio, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 5, 2007 Leinie’s Big Butt is a clear, amber color with crimson hues. There is a diminishing, foamy, light brown head that leaves a thin, frothy crown. Lightly caramelized malt and a hint of fruit and alcohol comprise the aroma. The flavor is malty with some chocolate notes and has some fruitiness and alcohol in the finish. This beer has a medium body, a moderate level of carbonation, and a bit watery at times. Big Butt is an okay and unexciting Doppelbock...
