Pours a translucent, sparkling brown with a large amount of tan head. Coffee, roasted almonds, slight lemony hops tartness in the flavor. Initial sips reveal an unmistakable American macro lager flavor, but that unwelcome taste dissipates after awhile. Long, tasty roasted coffee finish. Lively, refreshing, and soft in the palate. Medium-bodied. Perhaps a little overcarbonated, making it a bit of a challenge to finish. Big Butt is a good example of the doppelbock style and one of Leinie’s best beers. It was a good fit as a sipping beer while I watched the NFC Championship game. ford9719 (369), Vilseck, Germany

| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Jan 15, 2007 Pours a dark brown with a solid cap of tan foam. Decent lacing. No aroma. I looked, I hunted, I searched. No aroma. At least it didn’t smell bad...
...But it sure did taste bad. What is this? Nothing in the flavor suggests a doppelbock, or even a regular bock for that matter. Just a plain insipid lager beer. But one with a nasty cheap rotgut malt liquor aftertaste.
Medium bodied at best, but that may be too generous. markas101 (563), Fargo, North Dakota, USA

Deep amber color. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Caramel/malty nose. Starts with a bitter - not sweet caramel flavor, some hoppiness in finish. $1.49 for a 12oz bottle from John’s Grocery Iowa City, Ia.

Though I do suggest keeping this brew not as cold. The flavor comes out much more at a warmer temperature and makes for a better experience. Great in the winter months. hopscotch (5482), Vero Beach, Florida, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 13, 2006 Bottle... Clear ruby lager with a small, fizzy, beige head. Malty aroma with notes of caramel, maple syrup and chocolate malt. The flavor is medium sweet, but hopped adequately to eliminate any chance of the malts becoming cloying. Maple and plum. Full-bodied and almost fatty with lively carbonation. Finishes fairly clean. Thanks to headbanger for shipping the bottle to me! moejuck (1165), Ohio, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 4, 2006 Big Butt is not a terrible beer at all, but it could be much better. The pour suprised me as this Dopplebock was much lighter than expected. The head was minimal as well. The aroma was of malt, and some grassiness of sorts. The taste is more malty than not, but there is a hint of something foul in this one that I just don’t like. Perhaps my version was skunked a little--but if not, this beer suffers from something wrong in the taste department."
