Smell has a pleasant whiff of molasses, but underlying corn sweetness. Taste carries the impression through. Just a little dark malt flavor, pinprick cola style bubbles and a lot of adjuncts.A little smokiness here and there. A halfway decent beverage, just not quite near what it claims to be. Sometimes its strong and nice with a strong caramel taste and nutty finish. other times its a little watery, light and lacks flavor. At its best i would give it a 3.5 worse.. 2.5 badnewsbeers (1026), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 9, 2005 I’ve never come across such a strong caramel flavor in a bock beer. The caramel melds with the hops and other malts in a superb fashion, showing lots of bubblegum, cola and sea-salty undertones, and a pleasantly soft finish. The thin body is just about perfect for a doppelbock, as is the ruby-amber color and bready aroma. But after checking the other ratings I concur that this may be slightly "weak" in abv & body. The mystery is how Leinie can put out such swill in the mainstream and at the same time this side operation is among the best in the business! Gurst (338), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | May 31, 2005 A bit off for a doppelbock, but it’s still very enjoyable. Alcohol is low, flavors are mellow, and the body is mediocre. Not really doppled in any way other than name. Taste is molasses, caramel hops, and some sweet tutti-frutti. Very slight bitter in the aftertaste, and a bit slimy and skunky throughout. Pailhead (2610), Allen Park, Michigan, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 16, 2005 Bottle: Aroma is a little on the light side. Niuttiness stands out the most with some light chocolate and caramel. Pours a transparent dark reddish-brown with a small tan head that fades quickly. Malty with chocolate and caramel with a moderate nutty finish. Thinner than most doppels. Drinkable, but much better versions of the style out there.
