I have to say that every non-German doppelbock I’ve had has kind of sucked. So, I begin this tasting skeptical. Exhibit 1: The Appearance. Well, it looks right, it has the deep ruby that Celebrator has (although it’s a bit clearer than that paragon of all beers). The head is kind of small comparatively, but the right shade of light tan and a creamy, foamy consistency. Lacing is tight and fairly sticky, with excellent deep racing that takes it’s time getting back to the surface. Exhibit 2: Smell. Smells kind of right: bread is dominant, with some cookie thrown in for variety, but it’s also got some macro-ish skunk that is never welcome in any beer. A faint cherry tone too lurks under the bread and funk. Exhibit 3: The Taste. The Bread and Butter. Speaking of which, this has more of the later than the former. It kind of coats your mouth in a not-enjoyable way, like a layer of cold butter (which I don’t like particularly). Wimpy malt character, has barely any influence on the watery texture and mouthfeel. Almost no bread discernable; malt sweetness comes on late in the finish, but otherwise, this tastes like flat and watered-down cherry/strawberry pop with some meager but nice roasty/hoppy dryness. WEAK. OhioBeerFan (1), Athens, Ohio, USA does not count | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 14, 2005 A very nice beer. Great flavor, no bitter aftertaste. Goes down smoothly. Rich, creamy head. Great aroma, full-bodied taste, nice rich color. StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 8/20 | Mar 14, 2005 I’d classify this more as a dunkel than a doppelbock - too light on the palate, thin, lack of alcohol presence, and no real malt complexity. Soft, bubble gum taste with smooth caramel malts. Way to mellow for a doppelbock, and way to uninteresting for me. Won’t choose this one again. dragonlocks (15), Kailua, Hawaii, USA

No aftertaste which is kind of disappointing though, this is one of those beers you wish would linger. Overall one of my favorites. My only complaint is I can’t find it outside of the flatlands. And not a very tasty one at that. To sell it as a bock would be false advertizing. You can tell this is the son of a Miller.

I tkind of has a bock like aroma, and kind of a bock like taste. At least it looks like a bock. Kind of a disappointing BMC attempt at a double-b. Worth the rating but I won’t revisit it. beerman (8), Grand Forks, North Dakota, USA does not count | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 23, 2005 Drank out of a bottle.
