Appearance: clear, cherry-red color, with a big, creamy head o’ foam, so, impressive in that regard.
Aroma: malty, slightly roasted, a touch nutyy, hints of fruit, caramel rings in, too. Very mild, all told, though...caramel-nut-malt, they all show, somehow, but very, very meekly.
Taste: faint, mild, mellow...might pass as a bock, but a doppel, no way! This doesn’t give your tongue anything to grapple with, your tastebuds anything to toy with, your palate anything to enjoy. There’s a sweet malty character that shines through the flavor, bright cherry-ishness, nutty-ness, and it equals an okay drink if your standards are low enough, but, once again, not a doppelbock!!
Very underwhelming beer, though not undrinkable, it’s just that if you say "doppelbock" on the label, you’re setting up a standard that must be upheld somehow. This bottle is akin to calling something "kriek lambic" and offering up cherry kool-aid!

I was suprised by this gem. Very tasty. If you like a good bock, then you need to pick up this seasonal (curses) brew. Braudog (3762), Dayton, Ohio, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Sep 20, 2004 This is a big dark brown beer with a nice sticky foamy topping. Really sweet sugary aroma. Roasted sugar aroma with lightly bitter finish. Not bad. Skip (206), Indiana, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Jul 16, 2004 Compared to stated style: Too light in color, too highly hopped. The aroma is flowery, almost perfumy. A cult beer like other Leinies. Falconseye8 (525), Cartersville, Georgia, USA

Wasn’t born with one but the Big Butt Dopplebock is a very good beer. Chocolately, roasty, hoppy. Nice gravity, mouthful feeling. Feels like you’re drinking something. Arguably could be currently Leinie’s best Beer. I liked the Northwoods a little better myself. Big Butt had a smooth finish and tasted great from start to finish. I think some of you out there are getting bad bottles. At least that’s the excuse most people make when they get a bad Bell’s beer. robertsreality (2460), Minnesota, USA

A true dopplebock is not a lager, you shouldn’t be able to see through it, this beer looks like a lager. Not a great selling point. Much too carbonated as well. However, probably the best of the leininkugel line. darkerdabetter (255), Michigan, USA
