Commercial Description:
The Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout was brewed at Leinenkugel’s tiny 10th street brewery in Milwaukee. This brew boasts a selection of 11 malts and grains balanced by three different and distinct hops. Dark and complex, with chocolate tones and notes of dark fruits, it is daring yet delicious. Travels well. Ages well.

Dark brown/black body with faint brown head. A little soy amid the dry chocolate malt aroma. Faint vanilla in the smooth chocolate and oatmeal body. Thanks to Skyview for sharing!

Bottled, big thanks to pantanap for sending this through trade. Extremely dark pour, with an oily appearance; minimal brown head ending up with some swirls. Instantaneous aroma that exhibits a plethora of vanilla bean, molasses, dark chocolate and espresso, very nice! The flavor follows up faithfully with a strong roasted malt front with inner complexities of black cherry, raisin and currant. Full-bodied and smooth on the tongue. A bit of a tang in the finish that almost became a bit like soy-sauce, but maintainable. Lasting bitterness that lends a very pleasing tone of more chocolate and dark fruit. Tasty tasty.

bottle from the cheese man! thick black pour. Nice brown head, good retention. Nose is very matly, with some chocolate, and quite a bit of alcohol. Flavour is very roasty, some nice coffee, and chocolate notes. Medium body, a tad chewy, a decent bitter finish. A good impy, but not excellent.

Re-rate, bottle from Daknole, tasted at home
Looks inky and very dark brown in my Cigar City snifter. Aroma is, well, burnt fruit, with some tarry molasses notes...rich and I can see why people dig it. Flavour is sweet, palate relatively simple with oversweetened harsh espresso. Molasses-like finish. Overall, this brew is simplistic, hitting a few basic impy notes, and doing so with at least a modicum of style. However, it lacks dimension and nuance relative to the superior examples. 4-7-6-2-11 =3.0

First rate, Brouwer’s
Dark, tarry appearance. Somewhat thin body is tarry, oily, with black malt notes. Chewy, very much burnt fruit on the nose. Late heat. Really, it’s a starter impy, where they’ve held back on the good stuff quite a bit. 6-4-5-2-10 = 2.7

About a 1 inch thick head of fine and dense bubbles. Recedes slowly. Sweet meaty aroma with lots of roasted malts, teriaki sauce, tobacco and some dark fruit. Color is essentially black. Very roasty and powerful flavor. Lots of roasted grains, raisins, a hint of smoke and some peat notes. Got some scotch ale qualities in there. Pretty sweet. Finishes slick and creamy with a lingering sweet maltyness. A damn good brew from a brewer that brews a bunch of not so impressive beers.

bottle. Aroma of chocolate, roasted coffee malt, port, salmon, dried dark fruit like raisin and prunes. Black hue with a larger than average frothy tan head that left great lace and mostly lasted. Flavor is sweet and fruity with hints of roasted malt, chocolate, port, salmon, dried dark fruits, brandy, smoke, and oak that ends kind of bitter. Gang busters!! Palate is smooth and full bodied. Oily flat and a little hint of alcohol but very well hidden. This is very impressive for a macro brewery and very unexpected, especially since I found this at a BP gas station!! WTF!!

I ran across this on a trip to get some Kentucky Breakfast stout. Holy crap this is great stuff! Really unexpected coming from Leinenkugel’s. Aroma is of sweet malts, raisins, and licorice. Taste is thick, complex and sweet. One of the better stouts that I have had.

Pours thick black with a nice chocolate and roasted malt aroma and taste. Very nice mouthfeel. Good stuff.
