Rastacouere (5409), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Apr 14, 2008 Objectively speaking:
The original idea of an orange-flavoured stout. Good execution, but the flavour match is dubious. One of those rare beers that takes me several sips to just know if I globally like it or not.
I like:
Moderate roastiness. Comfortable palate, cleansing carbonation. Not exagerated orange - just soft and perfumey with the softest bitter finish. Never juicy, the stout character is more important than the fruit’s. No artificial feel.
I dislike:
It’s nothing that I really dislike, but I anticipated to like it more. Their regular Noire is excellent to me. This feels like a useless addendum. Furthermore, I don’t feel any freshness.
after4ever (1753), Brier, Washington, USA Sep 21, 2008 12-oz. Thanks, Glouglouburp! Pours a nearly opaque dark brown with a thick, surging, rocky tan head. Plenty of lace showing as it falls. Very mild nose of roast, dark, fruit, and a bit of dark bread. Medium, creamy body, soft carb. Super mild mid-palate: fruit never shows up; nuts, brown bread, and roast do, though. Mild finish. Solid little effort. jjpm74 (3158), Stratford, CT 06614, Connecticut, USA Sep 9, 2008 Bottle courtesy of glouglouburp. Pours brown with a generous tan head. Smells of soap, nuts, dark fruit. Tastes of cherries, nuts, spice, a touch of bitterness. Lubiere (3324), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Aug 10, 2008 A deep dark stout with a thick froathy big bubbled moka head. A rather grassy aroma with notes of cacao, herbs and a bit of chocolate. In mouth, a good chocolate malt with herbal notes, burned toasts, sustained bitterness. Not a lot of oranges here, but you wouldnt want that in a stou. Very nice. Bought at Aux Dieux de la Biere, Trois Rivieres, 6.79$. Dickinsonbeer (2550), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Jul 2, 2008 Bottle. Pours a deep dark woody brown, not quite black at all, but has a nice frothy large lasting beige head with almost a soapy like powdery lace. Aroma is nice pungent thick roasted barley with chocoalte, and as it sits for a few minutes, the orange zest comes out a bit- almost like those german chcolate oranges you get as a kid. Flavor is nicely roasty, big rich chocoalte with a drying acrid burnt malt finish- but not too bitter and you only get a bit of orange oil in the end.. Overall, this is just a nice basic stout with a subtle twist. Im glad the orange didnt get out of control here. hopscotch (4591), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Jun 11, 2008 Bottle... Lightly hazed, dark, cola-colored ale with burnt caramel tints around the edges of the glass. Huge, frothy, beige head. Endless retention. Mocha aroma with minerally, metallic notes. Medium to full-bodied with lively carbonation. Fairly well-balanced with notes of coffee and chocolate. Sways a touch onto the bitter side. Lengthy, tongue-numbing, cocoa and coffee ground finish. Many thanks to glouglouburp for shipping this bottle to Florida!
