Commercial Description:
This Doppelbock, or "Double Bock", is a dark, extra full bodied lager after the best Bavarian tradition. Such beer was created by monks for the tough fasting period of Lent. They called it "liquid bread". Look for flavor notes of chocolate, candied fruit and roasted malt.

Bottle via Glouglouburp. Dark color and very carbonated. Smell of raisins, brown sugar, dark fruit, coco, malt, some hops and caramel. Taste of sweet bread, caramel, hops, malt, light coco powder, brown sugar and some minor coffee. Nice

750mL bottle, courtesy of kmweaver. Thanks, Ken! Clear reddish brown, light tan creamy head. Aromas of chocolate coated cherry rest on soft waves of smoked bread dough. Sweet brown sugary malt and red fruit flavors round to faint floral bitterness. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Not bad at all…

750mL bottle, courtesy of Glouglouburp. Thanks, Dany! Pours a dark, bold burgundy color; light tan head with fine-bubbled lacing. Sweet caramel, dried fruits and nougat in the aroma; residual sweetness. Relaxed carbonation. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: plenty of caramel, dried fruits, nougat (following the aroma); lots of sweetness left, with a solid malt core; some floral notes. Lengthy finish: sugar, caramel, and nougat.

750 ml bottle from Trappe a Fromage, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. 2007 ed.

App.: Very deep mahogany, clear?, pretty good tan foam. Aroma: Rich malts, nutty, dark bread crust, light floral perfume (really), milk chocolate, brown sugar, dark dried fruits, reminds me of dark rum. Palate: Fairly full body, sparse but sharp carbonation, overall syrupy and sumptuous. Flav.: Lots of molasses, salty and a bit like licorice, burnt sugar, some green leafy herbals, a bit of milk chocolate, certainly like a dark rum, some alcohol; sweet and rich, leaving a bit of the molasses and licorice behind along with a hint of warming alcohol.

Porthos is portly, which is bad for a Musketeer, but wonderful for a doppelbock!

Rich, thick hazelnut and chocolate in the nose with some grape-like fruitiness. Opaque mahogany brown body with ruby highlights is topped by a low tan fine bubbled head that recedes to a lasting cover. Thick malt sweetness up front is toasty and chocolatey with a pleasant underlying dark malt bitterness that keeps the sweetness from becoming cloying. Some saltiness in the aftertaste. Creamy smooth medium body with lightly prickly engaging carbonation. Well-made! Tulip glass. Cellar temperature. Bottle (Vintage 2007, Le Gobelet, Jan-08).

750ml bottle, 2007 vintage. Roasty, caramel malt nose, sweet and toasty along with some faint banana and spice. Clear deep brown color, head disperses quickly leaving a curtain of lace behind. Flavor follows the aroma closely, with plenty of roasty, darkly sugary malt, blended with touches of licorice and cocoa and lingering hints of hazelnut and raisin at the finish. Smooth with a low-medium amount of effervescence and a medium-full body. Nice Doppel, with an unusually darkly roasted character for the style. Thanks to Tom for the share.
