341ml bottle from Glouglouburp, 2007 (why is it already retired?). Another weird thing, there is no English on the bottle, it’s all in French. Isn’t that against the law or something? Pours dark brown with a small head but a rather sticky lacing. Aroma is strong, starts off boozy, prune-y maltiness then comes lots of dark fruits, some light herbal-ness, some faint cereal. Taste is similarly dominated with boozy prunes and some light chocolate. Aftertaste is long with chocolate and slight over-rip plums and some alcohol. Slight warming on the tongue. A medium-light beer with a slightly fizzy mouthfeel from the carbonation. A bit more than half way done with the bottle and starting to feel the alcohol.

Chocolate, dark fruit and alcohol greet the nose with nutty, sherry-like undertones. Opaque brown body is topped by a low but lasting brown head that leaves some spotty lacing. Very sweet malt character is balanced by darked malt bitterness. Fruitiness emerges especially in the aftertaste. Medium light body with moderate carbonation. Floral and marzipan flavours emerge as it warms. Bottle (Trade, May-07) sampled with Oakes in June 2007. Thanks, MartinT!

12 oz bottle that I found in my cooler after RBSG 2007. Thanks to whoever brought this! 2007 vintage. Cloudy reddish brown with a brown head. Nice, thick lace. Rich caramel nose, light banana, molasses, raisin and clove all jump out. Very rich body. Chewy malts, molasses and fruit flavors dominate, and the spices meander in late - clove, something peppery and a bit of yeastiness and banana. Excellent stuff - is there such a thing as an Imperial Weizen? No alcohol noticed, shocking at 10%.

Very dark brown in colour, large dissipating tan coloured head, light lacing. The aroma is rich, slightly burnt, lots of earthy malts, dark fruits, good sweetness, some chocolate. The flavour has some yeast, dark fruits, chocolate, chewy, some light alcohol starts to come through. Full mouthfeel, medium/large body, high carbonation. Finishes warm with a lingering malty sweetness. Alcohol isn’t overpowering, good balance, smooth for a 10% beer. This brewery is starting to get exciting.

Very cloudy. Deep burgundy with a little brown to it. Chewy, deep malts - hints at chocolate and dark fruit. Late splash of alcohol. It’s a very big rendition of the style, and the maltiness definitely stands up to overwhelm some of the fruitiness/phenolicness you’d expect from the style. But it is a nice winter brew.

Very dark brown. Thick lasting brown head. Smells like a dusty chocolate banana. Creamy body. Loads of chocolate up front. Big alcohol wave finish (Tsunami!). A bit sticky sweet. Banana is softer in flavour than in aroma.

Bouteille 2006.
