2009 MiBGWF: Well 3 out of 4 ain’t bad... actually this beer is hardly bad either but falls short of the lofty standards of the other 3 I had before it. Coppery amber hue with a solid frothy head and good lace. The aroma has notes of sweet caramel and bready malt, slight grassy hop, and some smoke. What is missing is any presence of peat, sea salt or other earthy characteristics found with the better examples of the style. The taste is more of the same, mostly sweet malts and fruity overtones with just a dash of rye bread and a minerally tone. Some hop spice attempts to come about but was quickly crushed. Methinks the brewer did have some peated malt but did not use enough. Still it did little to damper my enthusiasm for this new brewery.
