kmweaver (2118), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA May 15, 2008 12.7oz, 2006 vintage. Pours a hazy, dark ruby-brown with some particulates; thin light-tan head with fine-bubbled lacing. Lots of overripe cherries, soft vinegar (nothing sharp), leather and tobacco in the aroma; not as much tartness as I’d like to see, but still a pleasant, fruity malt character that isn’t overly acidic or flabbily full of vinegar (i.e., a solid step up from Duchesse). Medium mouthfeel: very light carbonation; viscous, chewy red and dark fruits, not quite as overripe as the aroma suggests; not a lot of tartness, but the funky, balsamic fruit core is pretty tasty; some pleasant acidity to balance things out, along with a bit of citrus and loads of ripe-to-overripe cherries all throughout this beer. Medium finish, with some breadiness coming through, toasty malts and residual dried cherries; a bit of heaviness left at the far end.
the_chandler (200), West Virginia, USA Sep 28, 2008 Pours a dark tan/light brown. Moderate foamy head. Good amount of sediment settles to the bottom. Aroma is pretty fruity. Thats about all I get from it. Flavor, however...tart. Very fruity, a lot of grape, raisin, plum, apple, etc. Very much more like a wine to me than a beer. No hop or leafy flavor at all. Very little malt, although it is present. Definitely pretty good, but not really my thing. pantanap (781), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 27, 2008 bottle from a recent trade..... dark mohogany brown with a thin off-white head.... aroma of rich toffee and caramels, slightly woody without any distinguishing sour components which seems odd considering this is labeled as a sour.... sweet dried cherries dominated by caramel/tofee malts with little to no sourness to it. mor in line with a sweet and woody cherry cider. mild to medium carbonation. drinkable but probably wouldn’t be high on my list to have again. jeff789 (54), Pennsylvania, USA Sep 25, 2008 Sour Ales are easily my favorite style. I’ve had sour ales i’ve liked more than this, and i’ve had quite a few more that i’ve liked less than this. Quite complex... Notes of berry, plum, apple? The tartness/sourness was not near the sour of many other Flemish Ales... I found the sweet/sour play to be a little unbalance on the sweet side. BoBoChamp (720), Gent, Belgium Sep 22, 2008 38cl, from Geers Oostakker, very complex, yet easy to drink, balanced, cloudy, small head, very good brew beergod! (41), Houston, Texas, USA Sep 7, 2008 This ale pours a dark amber brown with a small head. The nose is of medium dark berries with a slight tartness. Taste a bit like plum. Nice malt flavor, fruity, and finishes with a bit of tart sourness. Overall very enjoyable and it really really complex.
