Commercial Description:
This is our American version of a UK “Premium Bitters.” Historically, UK Bitters have been ales made with local malt, moderate amounts of hops, lightly carbonated, and contained larger amounts of alcohol. Because of the balance of residual maltyness and hops, this beer is full-bodied yet very drinkable. Something that gents could put down a few of and still make it home to the Missus and kids with out too much trouble.
In some respects we have patterned the Lightning American Amber Ale after the classic Premium Bitters, but in other respects it is more malty, more bitter, higher in alcohol content, and at the same time smoother and more drinkable with a prolonged and enjoyable finish.
This beer has been made by the head brewer since his graduate school days with very few changes. If you think back to the early 80s when hair was big and beer was little, there was a need for something more enjoyable. Being fed up with the available beer styles and trying to save a buck, a recipe was developed that made an American version of classic UK Premium Bitters. Using literally buckets of hops from homegrown hop plants in the backyard and a well stocked homebrew shop, the resulting beer was big, malty, hoppy and enjoyable. You might even say like a “bitters” but bigger and better.
We have taken this beer one step further at the brewery by adapting the original recipe to make optimum use of our brewing and fermenting equipment. We include selected British malts in our recipe to bring out the beers’ hoppy character and carbonate naturally to smooth out any possible rough edges. We like to sat this beer is great at a backyard barbecue, but when served in a wine glass it can be enjoyed at any sit down dinner.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has notes of sweet malt and carame, as well as lighter notes of alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and alcohol, leading to a dry strawy finish.

Bottle. According to the label this is a US attempt at a ESB. Pours with a medium sized bone colored head over a hazed amber (no better word for it), hued body. Aroma is malt forward with pine needles, light fruit/banana esters, toffee, ad vanilla. Taste is copper, vanilla and toffee, a bitter metallic note, raisins, light hops, and autumn leaves. Very good, but not a hop based experimentery(sp? at this time of the evening) amber ale. Light bubbles, but thin.

On tap at The Local in SD. Pours an amber color with a light beige head. The aroma is massively buttery with outrageous amounts of diacetyl. Has a tart sourness from the disastrous brewing mess. This is indeed shite. I like the Local because the folks there are really nice, so it’s disappointing to see them serving a crap beer like this.

Taster at the brewery in Poway. Pours a slightly hazy amber body with a thin, off-white head that leaves a light lacing. Aroma is bready with some toasted toffees, nuts, melons, and citrus. Flavor is quite tasty. Lots of distinct flavors including a nice amount of bitterness. Toasted breads, caramels, assortment of fruits, and a bigger than anticipated hop bite. Moderate lingering aftertaste after a dry finish. Full bodied and smooth. Overall, definitely my favorite sampling of the day. Lots of flavor and a very enjoyable bitterness. Good stuff.

This beer was obviously amber in color, transparent, hardly a head to speak of. The smell is faint malt and cereal but is almost non-existent. The flavor is very malty, not any distinct hop flavors but there is a bitterness to the beer. The label says this is an ESB (albeit American style) and a so I don’t see why it has to be 7.5%. To its credit, the alcohol is not noticeable. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 03-22-2008 02:37:56

22oz bottle. Poured a medium and slightly hazy amber color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of toasted graininess, nutty, some citrus, and a little bready. Tastes of citrus, toasted caramel, and toffee. Lightly bready in there too. Light alcohol finish.
