Commercial Description:
This is our American version of a UK “Premium Bitters.” Historically, UK Bitters have been ales made with local malt, moderate amounts of hops, lightly carbonated, and contained larger amounts of alcohol. Because of the balance of residual maltyness and hops, this beer is full-bodied yet very drinkable. Something that gents could put down a few of and still make it home to the Missus and kids with out too much trouble.
In some respects we have patterned the Lightning American Amber Ale after the classic Premium Bitters, but in other respects it is more malty, more bitter, higher in alcohol content, and at the same time smoother and more drinkable with a prolonged and enjoyable finish.
This beer has been made by the head brewer since his graduate school days with very few changes. If you think back to the early 80s when hair was big and beer was little, there was a need for something more enjoyable. Being fed up with the available beer styles and trying to save a buck, a recipe was developed that made an American version of classic UK Premium Bitters. Using literally buckets of hops from homegrown hop plants in the backyard and a well stocked homebrew shop, the resulting beer was big, malty, hoppy and enjoyable. You might even say like a “bitters” but bigger and better.
We have taken this beer one step further at the brewery by adapting the original recipe to make optimum use of our brewing and fermenting equipment. We include selected British malts in our recipe to bring out the beers’ hoppy character and carbonate naturally to smooth out any possible rough edges. We like to sat this beer is great at a backyard barbecue, but when served in a wine glass it can be enjoyed at any sit down dinner.

Draft @ Hamilton’s Tavern. Pours a medium brown with an off white head that left good lacing. Nose of toasted malts and not much else. Finish was quite bitter, in a good way. Overall a pretty good ESB.

02-Mar-08 (22-oz bottle: Purchased 01-Feb-08 for $4.49 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) At 7.5%, I’m expecting a fairly big and bold amber ale, and this beer certainly delivers. It’s very malty, caramely and fairly sweet, and while there’s no question that malt is the name of the game here, it also offers a mild hop bitterness and citrus/pine hop flavors from start to finish to keep the beer honest. It boasts a medium-full body that is quite rich and opulent for the style, and the mouthfeel is creamy and round, but the finish could be a bit more dry on the palate. Although this isn’t an especially aromatic brew, the sweet and very fruity nose also exhibits medium-strong caramel notes. The hazy, deep copper-colored body is capped by an inch-tall, creamy, off-white head that exhibits magnificent retention. Significant lacing sticks to much of the glass. Overall, this is a solid amber ale and one of the best beers I’ve tasted from Lightning. It’s very easy to get caught up in the recent trends and focus on the "big" beer styles from a brewery, but at Lightning, that isn’t really their thing anyway. Here is a basic style done right, though the alcohol could use a bit more restraint.

Bomber from South Bay Drug. Amber, near mahogany, color with a minimal beige head. Medium body with smooth carbonation. Flavor is caramel and floral hop. Finish is fairly balanced. Overall this is a very tasty ale. For an amber it is very nice.

22oz bottle from the South Bay Drugs. Appears in the glass as a perfect reddish toned hue with just the right topping of head on top. The aroma is a sweet and delicate offering of caramel malt and a really light hint of toffee. The flavor was more or less the same with a much more notice of toffee and the caramel malt had a roasted touch to it. An average amber with not much to write about.

Amber color with hardly a head. Aromas were roasted caramel with touches of citrus. Citrus fell off in the flavor to be replaced by some nuttiness. Just a touch soapy, but not too bad.

Fruity fresh navel oranges and cedar, pine and sap scented hops in the nose. More of the cedar and cherry wood tasted, along with some caramel and crystal malt, turning to a creamed orange and bread crust flavor over the middle, and finishing slightly stale, moldy, filmy and twangy, but also with a decent grassy/greenish flavor. It’s a strange beer, and I think it’s almost there, there’s some good stuff in there, but I don’t think the recipe or process has been perfected yet, but from what I gather it seems like it would be a really solid hoppy amber if some of the faint mildew flavors were taken care of.

Hazy, deep amber with a small white head. The nose is lightly sweet with toffee, raisins and herbs. The flavor is lightly sweet, golden raisins, caramel and herbal hops. Medium body is slightly thin with moderate carbonation.
