Commercial Description:
This is our American version of a UK “Premium Bitters.” Historically, UK Bitters have been ales made with local malt, moderate amounts of hops, lightly carbonated, and contained larger amounts of alcohol. Because of the balance of residual maltyness and hops, this beer is full-bodied yet very drinkable. Something that gents could put down a few of and still make it home to the Missus and kids with out too much trouble.
In some respects we have patterned the Lightning American Amber Ale after the classic Premium Bitters, but in other respects it is more malty, more bitter, higher in alcohol content, and at the same time smoother and more drinkable with a prolonged and enjoyable finish.
This beer has been made by the head brewer since his graduate school days with very few changes. If you think back to the early 80s when hair was big and beer was little, there was a need for something more enjoyable. Being fed up with the available beer styles and trying to save a buck, a recipe was developed that made an American version of classic UK Premium Bitters. Using literally buckets of hops from homegrown hop plants in the backyard and a well stocked homebrew shop, the resulting beer was big, malty, hoppy and enjoyable. You might even say like a “bitters” but bigger and better.
We have taken this beer one step further at the brewery by adapting the original recipe to make optimum use of our brewing and fermenting equipment. We include selected British malts in our recipe to bring out the beers’ hoppy character and carbonate naturally to smooth out any possible rough edges. We like to sat this beer is great at a backyard barbecue, but when served in a wine glass it can be enjoyed at any sit down dinner.

22oz bottle, courtesy of mj. Thanks, Mike! Pours a bold, orange-amber color; thin, medium-bubbled head with slight lacing. Light, slightly metallic aroma, showing tea-like malts and some red fruits; not much. Lots of metal and red fruits and chewy dried fruits / doughy malts; too metallic and light carbonation; some mineral / earthy hops, but not much; a bit unremarkable. Medium, drying tea-like malts and dried red fruits.

650 ml bottle from Bev4less in Santee. Pours a copper brownish color with an unimpressive small off-white head. The aroma is fairly light and non-distinct with just a hint of roasted malts. The flavor is a bit better with malts, biscuits, and biter hops making their presence known. The mouthfeel is full and satisfying. The Finish is long with walnuts and bittersweet hops lingering. overall: This is more squarely a biter than an amber ale. Recommended with reservations.

Bottle from Beverages 4 Less. Pours a copper color. Sweet malty aroma. Somewhat bready with a little bit of hoppiness. Sweet and malty. Somewhat biscuity. Finish is a little hoppy. Fairly balanced, but seems to be leaning toward the malty side.

Tasted from bottle at PP bottle shop. Some malty aroma. Maybe some DMS. The bitterness is harsh. Amber color. Medium and small bubble head.

Poured a clear orange-copper color with an off-white head. Sweet malty aroma with nutty notes and a light fruit. Malty flavor. Sweet with some fruity notes and a mild hop and bitter finish. Light to medium bodied.

22oz bomber from SBD. Pours a red/brown, copper color with a thin white head that fades quick. Smells very malty to me, kind of a mellow earthy hoppiness in the background. Tastes spicy hoppy up front, sweet malty through the middle and more hops and malt on the finish. Thin, crisp mouthfeel. Nice vibrant carbonation. Great brew, potent too.

22 oz bottle. This was a very interesting beer. Dark amber color. Sweet, hoppy, aroma. Kind of funky - almost smells like a belgian saison. Flavor is bitter, strong, lots of alcohol. This actually almost reminds me of an English Barley Wine. Is this really an Amber Ale? This is the strongest Amber I have ever had. Very interesting take on the style. Definitely true to it’s word, it’s a cross of several styles.

On tap at Hamilton’s. Didn’t think this was an ESB at the time; just didn’t really fit the category. Aroma reminded me of wort or being on a brewery tour; not bad, but a bit unusual. As golubj said, the flavor initially wasn’t very good and tasted like ass aged bubblegum. It didn’t get better, but wasn’t anything great.
