Commercial Description:
We have created our Black Lightning Porter to have intensely rich malt aromas with strong notes of chocolate and coffee. This has been by the judicious blending of 9 different malts, the bulk of which are from classic UK maltsters. Even though many breweries will add coffee and cocoa extracts to produce these effects, we feel this cannot replace the subtleties experienced by using only malted and then roasted barleys.
Our Black Lighting Porter is further crafted with the generous amount of hops that it takes to balance the intense malt nature of this beer. Without this degree of hopping the beer might taste “sweet” from the residual sugar that remains after fermentation has completed.
Finally, Black Lightning Porter is fermented and aged under a sophisticated process with our house strain of British Ale yeast. This results in one of the handful of truly refined extreme porters available. After fermentation is complete, we extensively age and lager the beer further. This has allowed us to allow sediment to settle and clear from the beer without the use of clarifying agents or filtration that may strip out additional flavor components.

Merritt Island Throwdown ’08: Bottle, courtesy Beerlando. Pours a dark brown color, with a foamy dark creamy head. Thick braids of lacing. Creamy chocolate aroma, with roasted qualities, and molasses. Roasted coffee flavor, with a malty profile that stands out. Chocolate is subdued, and a decent amount of caramel sticks out. Thin-bodied despite ABV, carbonated finish. Nice and easy.

Thanks to Bu11zeye for this. Poured black with tan head, nice retention. Aroma of dark roast and with alcohol spice. Flavor much the same with some bittering qualities. Good Beer!

Bottle from Joey at South Bay Drugs. Huge pop when I opened it, but fortunately no gusher. However, when I poured it it was half head and half beer...although the head was a nice dark mocha color. Body was obsidian. Head dissipated after 10 minutes and left some artistic lacing. Nose was choclate malts and deep roasted grains...very stout like. Mouthfeel is wonderfully creamy, although it does have pretty high, but well integrated carbonation. Flavors of espresso, malted chocolate and a great hop finish with a touch of ash.

Had a taster at the brewery. It poured dark with a light brown head. The initial taste had a nice roasted malt flavor which delivered a smooth aftertaste. Overall, it is a very nice well balanced porter. And for those Stout lovers, this porter will surprise you.

22 oz bottle from South Bay Drugs. A complete pitch black opaque liquid with a perfect yet delicate layer of creamy foam. For the nose, I find a moderate roasting of malt with a light hint of dairy cream that fits just right together. The flavor was dark and roasted with a over lining coffee taste and a chance of melted milk chocolate aftertaste to finish it off. This is a more finer porter than I’m used to but sit barely stood out to me enough to leave a memorable impression.

Pours very dark mahogany with a thick, cascading tan head of tiny bubbles. Heavy caramel nose with chocolate-covered malted milk balls. Rich, yet very drinkable taste. Rich coffee, baker’s chocolate, and milk chocolate are prevalent. A strong molasses/simple syrup sugar flavor is there as well with cream. A biting, sour finish attibuted to the hops. Nice beer.

Via trade with stefanje. Thanks! The most drinkable Baltic Porter I’ve had yet. Aroma was weak but could pick up roasted malt and chocolate. Pour was perfect. A deep burnt brown/near black with a pillowy 3 finger mahongany head. Taste was a little thin. Mostly bitter coffee and roasted malt with a hint of hops on the back of the throat in the aftertaste. Very heavy carbonation, which is great. Not bad.

22oz bottle, no date from South Bay Drugs and Liquor. Deep brown--black in the glass--with a big ’ol 4 finger brown head, great retention, though maybe a little overcarbonated. Lots of chocolate and roasted malts--not ashy, charred, or burnt (nice!)--chocolate chip cookies, and some light brown sugar. Flavor is much more intense with some almost soy notes in addition to some alcohol presence. I can?t really pick up on any hops other than with the dry finish and bitterness peaking at a 3. Slight ash is present. Full body with moderate to high carbonation. Really damn good and a pleasant surprise, though a bomber is a bit much for one person.
