Commercial Description:
We have created our Black Lightning Porter to have intensely rich malt aromas with strong notes of chocolate and coffee. This has been by the judicious blending of 9 different malts, the bulk of which are from classic UK maltsters. Even though many breweries will add coffee and cocoa extracts to produce these effects, we feel this cannot replace the subtleties experienced by using only malted and then roasted barleys.
Our Black Lighting Porter is further crafted with the generous amount of hops that it takes to balance the intense malt nature of this beer. Without this degree of hopping the beer might taste “sweet” from the residual sugar that remains after fermentation has completed.
Finally, Black Lightning Porter is fermented and aged under a sophisticated process with our house strain of British Ale yeast. This results in one of the handful of truly refined extreme porters available. After fermentation is complete, we extensively age and lager the beer further. This has allowed us to allow sediment to settle and clear from the beer without the use of clarifying agents or filtration that may strip out additional flavor components.

Bomber for SBD. Pours dark brown black color with a somewhat creamy brown head that has pretty good retention. Smells of sweet dark fruits and roasty malts. Tastes dark and bitter up front. Sweet malts on the finish with a roasty aftertaste. Very flavorful, bitter yet sweet. Borderline too carbonated, somewhat thick, full mouthfeel.

On draft at O’Briens. Ebony, opaque color with a small beige head. Aroma of dark roasty malts, anise, bitter chocolate, with notes of light maple syrup and sweet tea. Sweet burnt caramel and roasty malt flavors, coffee and prunes, floral hops become more evident as it warms. Smooth, full body and gentle carbonation.

650 ml bottle from Bev4less in Santee. Poured a jet black color with a big tan head that lasted a long time. The aroma was sweet with cookie dough, black walnuts and molasses. The flavor featured mild coffee, mocha and roasted malts. The mouthfeel was full, creamy and smooth. The finish was long and dry with a bit of biter walnuts lingering. Overall: Lacks the boldness of Olfabrikken, but that aside, this is one first rate porter. Recommended.

22 oz bottle thanks to drewbeerme for this sample. Pours black with a tan head. Lots of chocolate and roasted malts in the nose. Red fruits complement it. Dry chocolate flavors. Roasted malts, a little coffee, with a dusty and slightly ashy finish. Tasty porter.

22oz bottle, thanks to Dunk for this. pours black with biege-tan head. nose had dark chocolate, cherries, and dark fruits. a wonderful combination of chocolate and fruit in the aroma. flavor has some baker’s chocolate, mildly harsh coffee grounds, and dark fruits. an ashy finish. i’m not into this mouth feel, a bit thin and the carbonation is pretty fizzy. alcohol isn’t noticed.

Bottle from Beverages 4 Less. Pours pitch clack in color with a sizable dirty brown head. Dark roasted coffee aroma with a little bit of sweetness. Dark roasted malty flavors. Very rich with an almost peppery quality. Alcohol is well hidden.
