Commercial Description:
We have created our Black Lightning Porter to have intensely rich malt aromas with strong notes of chocolate and coffee. This has been by the judicious blending of 9 different malts, the bulk of which are from classic UK maltsters. Even though many breweries will add coffee and cocoa extracts to produce these effects, we feel this cannot replace the subtleties experienced by using only malted and then roasted barleys.
Our Black Lighting Porter is further crafted with the generous amount of hops that it takes to balance the intense malt nature of this beer. Without this degree of hopping the beer might taste “sweet” from the residual sugar that remains after fermentation has completed.
Finally, Black Lightning Porter is fermented and aged under a sophisticated process with our house strain of British Ale yeast. This results in one of the handful of truly refined extreme porters available. After fermentation is complete, we extensively age and lager the beer further. This has allowed us to allow sediment to settle and clear from the beer without the use of clarifying agents or filtration that may strip out additional flavor components.

Aroma is of sourness, beer is clearly infected. Flavors come through in taste, but overpowered by the sourness.

Bottle thanks to Naven. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aroma is dominated by sour notes. Flavor is slightly roasted with some oak and bubblegum but sour notes crop up too. I would guess this is infected since I can taste some of backbone porter notes in the flavor. Still, seems like a common problem for this brewery? It’s not bad but still would have liked to try this beer as *I think* it was intended. 6/4/7/3/14 (3.4/5)

Bottle. Aroma is massive amounts of festering brett and shit. In the mouth you can actually see what the beer is supposed to taste like with some rich, chocolaty malty notes, but there is also brett there that grows and grows to an overwhelming proportion. Clearly infected.

Bottle courtesy of Pantanap. Popped open the bottle and the oozing began, not a good start. Poured a dark brown with a thick brown head. Nose is FULL of Brett and not much else. Couldn’t get thru one glass. At first I just thought I got a accidentally infected bottle then I got home and see many others had the same experience. Maybe it was intentional? Either way, I definitely don’t like infected porters.

Bottle poured into a snifter produced a ton of coco colored head that settled to a thick lace. The body of the brew was the obvious black in color. Well another infected bottle comes my way. a Brett aroma and flavored porter a new one in my book. No freshness date on bottle so don’t know the batch I poured the glass and finished most of it but drain poured the rest of the bottle it got to be too much.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of TheCheeseMan. Pours completely opaque black with a dense light brown head. Rather phenollic aroma. Full-bodied, hard roasted malts, yeast and phenols. Dry and lightly astringent phenollic finish. 290509

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a huge brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of cherries, roasted malt, and fruit, as well as lighter notes of wood. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, cherries, and roasted malt, as well as lighter notes of wood, alcohol, and brettanomyces, leading to a dry roasted finish. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

Blind tasting at Papsø’s
Black color; big head, creamy. The aroma is tarty, it reminds me of BFM; is it intentional or an infection? It’s even a bit cheesy. Good body strength, round body, with good chocolate flavor and light sourness; some sweetness and strong bitterness; well balanced; dynamic. Maybe something is wrong, but the result is surely very good.
