Commercial Description:
We have created our Black Lightning Porter to have intensely rich malt aromas with strong notes of chocolate and coffee. This has been by the judicious blending of 9 different malts, the bulk of which are from classic UK maltsters. Even though many breweries will add coffee and cocoa extracts to produce these effects, we feel this cannot replace the subtleties experienced by using only malted and then roasted barleys.
Our Black Lighting Porter is further crafted with the generous amount of hops that it takes to balance the intense malt nature of this beer. Without this degree of hopping the beer might taste “sweet” from the residual sugar that remains after fermentation has completed.
Finally, Black Lightning Porter is fermented and aged under a sophisticated process with our house strain of British Ale yeast. This results in one of the handful of truly refined extreme porters available. After fermentation is complete, we extensively age and lager the beer further. This has allowed us to allow sediment to settle and clear from the beer without the use of clarifying agents or filtration that may strip out additional flavor components.

From bottle, blind #15. Pours dark brown to black with huge tan head. Acidic and fruity sourish aroma to a nice roasted base. Dry and slight smoked too. Smoked, roasted and fruity flavoured. Distinct smoked touch into the far finish. Light acidic too. Light hoppy too. Bitter and medium dry as the main lasting finishing impression.

Dark brown with creamy light brown head. Lots of chocolate and dark fruit. A little licorice. Unique yeast flavors for a porter. Enjoyable, with quite a bit of hops/bittereness. Nice.

Bomber, many thanks to whoever sent this my way! Poured rather clear deep brown with a fine, well-retained cap of tan head. The aroma opened and maintained an almost brandy and oaky sourness that threw me off a bit (this isn’t barrel-aged, is it?).. rich, well-roasted dark chocolate and coffee beneath.. earth and more coffee grounds rounded it out.. not what I expected, but it certainly grew on me. The flavor had dark chocolate, coffee, and brewer’s licorice at the core with earth, oak, and brandy accents.. the bitterness came mostly from earth and coffee.. finished with more of the sourness and some roasted black malts. Creamy, full carbonation on the palate with less sourness than the nose hinted at.. spicy, dry, and well-roasted beyond that.. balance was alright, with the carbonation probably getting it an extra 0.1 here. Interesting beer.. can’t tell if it’s in the early stages of an infection or if that character was intentional.

Tap at Stone Bistro. Wow, either this was the intended taste and aroma, and that’s just an amazing Baltic porter or I got poured the wrong beer. Pours black, mocha head. Aroma was just funky, with a sour nose. Taste,. sour and not anything I would have expected in a Baltic, but it just made the flavor outstanding. Dark fruits, some wood notes, malts and chocolate, some yeasty presence, toffee. I was getting a lot of brett / sourness.

22ox bomber courtesy of KingG, thanks for the trade! This thing poured fine but a massive head erupted in the glass and refuses to die! As you can guess, the color is solid black with a HUGE tan head. Very strong malty-grainy smell emanating from my glass. Not coffee-like but close. Very rich and decadent flavors of malty goodness. Maybe a hint of cacao in the finish. The alcohol is not present to the taste but I’m sure I will feel it soon. The drinkability is just ok mostly because of how rich the beer is. This is a fine baltic porter. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 03-21-2008 03:23:04
