Very sweet, very malt heavy but I am also tasting Bretts. Not sure if I’m tasting correctly, or if it was intended, or not. But the result is interesting. Pours black with tan head. Flavor is sweet, dark and heavy. Nose is that Brett flavor along with floral hops. Ends on a clean note. mspindler (351), Alta Loma, California, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Mar 2, 2009 Bomber. Pours black with no head except for a thin brown film. Aroma is roasty with plenty of chocolate and maybe some cooked dark fruit, a touch of grain. Flavor is surprisingly tart, and not as sweet as expected. More fruity and less chocolatey than expected. Plenty of roast. Very drinkable and better than I expected. Unique and well balanced, silky smooth with low carbonation. Good stuff. skmikeg (81), Poway, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 15, 2009 Pour a pitch dark black. small tan head lingers for a bit. aroma of chocolate and some dark fruit, but there is someting about the aroma that makes it not so nice. inital flavor of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit. the fruit almost has a sour taste to it. the alcohol is noticably . has a creamy mouthfeel. a pretty good porter but the aroma and slight sour fruit flavor takes away from it. | 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Feb 13, 2009 Enjoyed at Stone Bistro. Pours midnight black with small sustained head. Heavy aroma of roast and alcohol. Taste is quite roasty and powerfully alcoholic; almost to the point of being overwhelming. Definitely a sipper to be enjoyed on cold nights, but not a great offering at all. ChainGangGuy (2616), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA
| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Jan 30, 2009 Appearance: Pours a dark brown, near black body with a thin, bubbly, ivory-colored head.
Smell: Rich, dark maltiness scented by notes of coffee with some chunks of dark chocolate and a few drops of creosote extract stirred in. However, with each sniff, there’s a cumulative spoiled fruit character with an almost lactic quality to it. This might not end well.
Taste: Upfront we have dark malts with sweetish flavors of dark chocolate and black coffee. It’s a rich maltiness, there’s no doubt about it, but it cannot quite hide the tastes of tart, spoiled fruit juices and microwaved witlof. Finishes like the opening of a Wal-Mart on Black Friday, with good flavors and bad violently trampling my poor tongue and effectively ruining my Christmas for many years to come.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-high carbonation.
Drinkability: Flawed and well, quite frankly, it’s repulsive. Perhaps it’s an improperly made batch, as I sincerely hope this was not the intended result. Someday I hope to come across another bottle of Black Lightning Porter and be able to replace this review of Blech! Lightning Porter with kind words and effusive praise. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 15, 2009 Black in color with seemingly no head. The aroma is of strong coffee and bitter dark chocolate. The flavor is metallic with notes of coffe and chocolate with a strong alcohol backbone. The texture is syrupy. Overall I’d say its a great porter, very enjoyable...right up my alley TomDecapolis (3216), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA

Pours a deep black with a medium creamy tan head with a bunch of large bubble that laced. Aroma of rich roasted malts, caramel, nuts, vanilla and molasses. Flavor of dark bitter chocolate, caramel, vanilla, nuts, light smoke and a touch of hop bitterness and some alcohol. Well done!
