Commercial Description:
We have created our Black Lightning Porter to have intensely rich malt aromas with strong notes of chocolate and coffee. This has been by the judicious blending of 9 different malts, the bulk of which are from classic UK maltsters. Even though many breweries will add coffee and cocoa extracts to produce these effects, we feel this cannot replace the subtleties experienced by using only malted and then roasted barleys.
Our Black Lighting Porter is further crafted with the generous amount of hops that it takes to balance the intense malt nature of this beer. Without this degree of hopping the beer might taste “sweet” from the residual sugar that remains after fermentation has completed.
Finally, Black Lightning Porter is fermented and aged under a sophisticated process with our house strain of British Ale yeast. This results in one of the handful of truly refined extreme porters available. After fermentation is complete, we extensively age and lager the beer further. This has allowed us to allow sediment to settle and clear from the beer without the use of clarifying agents or filtration that may strip out additional flavor components.

This poured black in color with a thick brown head of medium to large sized bubbles that dissipated away. The nose is quite vinous with aromas of plum and dark fruit followed by just a touch of dark caramel and spice. In the mouth it was medium-bodied with lots of carbonation and the continuation of the dark vinous flavors. This was a bit simple but fresh and enjoyable.

On cask, so the head was really creamy, and the body was soft and smooth. Dark dark brown color with tan head. Dark chocolate, roasted coffee, nuts, cherries, caramel malt, and biscuits. Silky mouthfeel. I really enjoyed this one.

Sampled at Nov. 25th Quaff meeting, Jim C. brought in some bombers. Pours black with biege-tan head. Nose had dark chocolate, cherries, and dark fruits. The flavor has baker’s chocolate, coffee, and dark fruits. The taste lingers for quite some time. A very solid b. porter. Thanks again Jim~

Bottle: The aroma consists of chocolate, fruit, and light roastiness. It pours a dark brown with some faint orange highlights and a large tan head with excellent retention. There’s lots of chocolate and caramel up front with some faint fruit in the background. The finish is moderately roasty with some light coffee. Medium-full bodied with lively and somewhat prickly carbonation.

(Bottle) Pours black with a dark head. The aroma is rater Belgo-estery fruity, bit yeasty and medium malty with tones of plums/prunes, blue berries, creamy chocolate, dark coffee, caramel, dough, nuts and smoke. Shoe-polish alcohol tones are also present. Tiny hints of smoke, herbal hops and vanilla-like spices. The flavour starts with a light caramel, chocolate and fruity sweetness. Finish on a salty liquorice and coffee-ish note. The mouthfeel heavily carbonated yet round. Light sticky and alcohol numbing aftertaste. Light to medium sweet and medium bitter. Medium to full bodied.

Getting notebook online. Bottle. A good amount of malt on the nose. Notes of coffee and chocolate very soft in the flavor. Mouthfeel a bit watery. A decent beer.

The aroma holds dark stewed fruit, phenols, mild roast and chocolate. The body is dark brown and holds a firm mocha head. Dry, bitter roasted malt fore. Dark fruit, ash, burnt malt and a metallic twang. Cocoa in the far finish. Not quite what I was hoping for and some flavor elements are downright disappointing, but on the hole it has a decent feel and some aspects of the flavor are nice.

Bomber from South Bay Drug. Opaque black color with a 3-finger dark tan head. Aroma is rather mild. Dark roasted malt with a touch of chocolate. Flavor is exquisite roasted malt, with some chocolate, and possibly some dark fruit. Body is hard to figure out, as the carbonation is so firm and frothy. Let’s call it full bodied. The finish is reasonably dry, and the mouthfeel is wonderful. Not harsh. Not sticky. A really good Baltic Porter.
