Commercial Description:
We have created our Black Lightning Porter to have intensely rich malt aromas with strong notes of chocolate and coffee. This has been by the judicious blending of 9 different malts, the bulk of which are from classic UK maltsters. Even though many breweries will add coffee and cocoa extracts to produce these effects, we feel this cannot replace the subtleties experienced by using only malted and then roasted barleys.
Our Black Lighting Porter is further crafted with the generous amount of hops that it takes to balance the intense malt nature of this beer. Without this degree of hopping the beer might taste “sweet” from the residual sugar that remains after fermentation has completed.
Finally, Black Lightning Porter is fermented and aged under a sophisticated process with our house strain of British Ale yeast. This results in one of the handful of truly refined extreme porters available. After fermentation is complete, we extensively age and lager the beer further. This has allowed us to allow sediment to settle and clear from the beer without the use of clarifying agents or filtration that may strip out additional flavor components.

Courtesy Beerlando. Almost black pour, thick tan head that lingers a bit. Mainly light roast on the aroma, some residual sweetness and mild hops. Roasted chocolate, cocoa bitterness and roast on the taste. A solid, tasty, highly drinkable baltic.

Pours dark brown with a slightly lighter brown prominent head. Smells of light roastiness, some caramel and spice. Tastes roasty with some sweet malt and touches of bitterness. Some spicy hints on the finish.

Pours a very dark, chewy looking mahogany brown color. A large, foamy, coffee colored head crowns the brew and leaves patchy, sudsy lacing behind. The nose is rich and full, showing classic, malty Baltic notes of dark chocolate fudge, coffee, stewed figs, raisons, and a unique vanilla twist. The subtle hop bill is earthy, settling into the back of the nose and adding inviting balance. The flavor is similar, with rich chocolate leading the way for roasted espresso beans, nougat, and stewed dark fruits. Mild earthy hops again lend balance, but there’s no mistaking this brew as malt dominant, like a Baltic should be. A medium-full, silky body goes down very easy. Finishes with roasted malts and lingering sweet fruits. This is a highly enjoyable brew.

Growler, via a BA trader. Pours a flat black body with a little light passing thru on the edges under a nice small foamy one finger chocolate brown head. The nose is roasty and chocolaty with a hint of licorice and some cocoa powder. Light hoppiness. The flavor is really pretty well balanced, just enough hoppiness to keep the sweetness in check, roasty and chocolaty with some dark fruits on the finish. A little bit of alcohol coming out in the finish as well, but pretty subdued. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with a nice smooth texture thanks to the very soft gentle carbonation. A little lingering chalkiness. Overall, pretty darn nice.

Bottle from Chris in SD. Thanks! Pour is jet black with a huge, creamy brown head. Aroma is roasty and bitter with some chocolate/cofee. Flavor is roasty as well. Slight bitterness, but finish is sweet. Body is a bit light. Highly carbonated. Tasty.

(Bottle) Pours an opaque black body with a thick long-lasting tan head. Aroma of green bananas, bread, roasted malt, Belgian yeast, and clove. Flavor of chocolate, coffee, light sourness, and roasted malt with a nicely carbonated mouthfeel.

Bottle, Merritt Is. Throwdown, thanks Beerlando :-) Gorgeous looks: tan head on top of a black body with tan lacing. Flavors are smooth roasted malt. Minerally chalky, talcum powder but silky soft palate. Solid brew!
