Commercial Description:
We have created our Black Lightning Porter to have intensely rich malt aromas with strong notes of chocolate and coffee. This has been by the judicious blending of 9 different malts, the bulk of which are from classic UK maltsters. Even though many breweries will add coffee and cocoa extracts to produce these effects, we feel this cannot replace the subtleties experienced by using only malted and then roasted barleys.
Our Black Lighting Porter is further crafted with the generous amount of hops that it takes to balance the intense malt nature of this beer. Without this degree of hopping the beer might taste “sweet” from the residual sugar that remains after fermentation has completed.
Finally, Black Lightning Porter is fermented and aged under a sophisticated process with our house strain of British Ale yeast. This results in one of the handful of truly refined extreme porters available. After fermentation is complete, we extensively age and lager the beer further. This has allowed us to allow sediment to settle and clear from the beer without the use of clarifying agents or filtration that may strip out additional flavor components.

On cask @ Stone world Bistro in Escondido. Quite possibly the best porter I’ve ever had! Beer poured a deep black brown with a big frothy light tan head that left great lacing. Nose was big on toffee, chocolate, caramel and nutmeg. Hid the alcohol very well, a great brew!

On tap at Stone World Bistro. Pours a deep black with a medium creamy tan head with a bunch of large bubble that laced. Aroma of rich roasted malts, caramel, nuts, vanilla and molasses. Flavor of dark bitter chocolate, caramel, vanilla, nuts, light smoke and a touch of hop bitterness and some alcohol. Well done!

Tap at Stone Bistro. Wow, either this was the intended taste and aroma, and that’s just an amazing Baltic porter or I got poured the wrong beer. Pours black, mocha head. Aroma was just funky, with a sour nose. Taste,. sour and not anything I would have expected in a Baltic, but it just made the flavor outstanding. Dark fruits, some wood notes, malts and chocolate, some yeasty presence, toffee. I was getting a lot of brett / sourness.

Bomber. Pours black with no head except for a thin brown film. Aroma is roasty with plenty of chocolate and maybe some cooked dark fruit, a touch of grain. Flavor is surprisingly tart, and not as sweet as expected. More fruity and less chocolatey than expected. Plenty of roast. Very drinkable and better than I expected. Unique and well balanced, silky smooth with low carbonation. Good stuff.

On tap cask at Stone Brewing SD. Toasted malt on the nose. Jet black with frothy tan head. Very sweet with hints of abv. Excellent lingering bitter finish. At first it had a bit of a graininess on the palate but that went away as I finished the pint. Very smooth full palate an almost creamy beer. Very good beer in my opinion meets all guidelines of the style.

On tap at the 10th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Festival: Pours an opaque oily black with a thin ring of tan head. Aroma of sweet dark caramel and chocolate malts with some plum complexity. Body starts thick, sweet and viscous with good dark fruity complexity and some toasty caramel toward a sticky sweet, enjoyable finish that hides the alcohol well.
