Commercial Description:
At the Lightning Brewery we make Lightning Kölsch style Ale in a way that respects the German appellation and their fine beers, while still clear on the fact that this is Kölsch beer much in the same way as “Kölschbier” in Germany. We use local untreated water, the finest available German pilsner and wheat malts, and traditional strains of German hops. Those ingredients coupled with our selected strain of Kölsch yeast and our traditional method of cool fermentation, natural carbonation, and lagering of Lightning Kölsch style Ale make for a beer as close as you can find to an original without having to travel to Cologne.

On-tap at Stone as Lightning Kellar Kolsch. Pours cloudy orange with a creamy, white head, weird filmy lace. Smells yeasty and bready grainy, sweet. Tastes malty and grainy bready sweet, slightly spicy. Medium body, ok carbonation.

Pours medium golden with thin rim of a head. Aroma is sweet fruit and estery. Flavor begins with sweet bananas and dry hops and finishes with a dry hoppiness. Medium bodied. Seems a little off style for a kolsch.

Sample at San Diego Brewing Company. Pours a murky dark gold color with a minimal white head that diminishes to nothing. Top stringy ring of lacing with nothing under it. Sweet fruit and spices in the nose, plus a bit of malt. Light-bodied with a fruity character and flavors of spice and earthy malts. The finish is sweet and fruity leaving a sweetness behind. Decent overall.

Yellow gold colored beer with a big bubbly head reminiscent of every Lightning beer I have drank. Sweet grainy aroma. Light fruitiness. Light sweet grain flavor with a touch of fruity esters.

On tap at pizza port san clemente clear yellow with a white head. It was the beer they were selling folks who came in asking for Bud, Miller or Coors. Sweet flavor that I just didn’t like.

Tasted at Lightning. Light golden amber with white head. Malty aroma and a sweet malty taste with a hint of banana and a good clean finish.

Not usually a kölsch guy, but this stuff is pretty good. When faced with the tremendous onslaught of mega IPA’s, this is like a nice, refreshing treat that doesn’t disappoint. I like it because I can DRINK it and not have to sip it. Solid all around.
