Commercial Description:
Old Tempest Ale is Lightning Brewery’s Winter Seasonal beer. This beer is a classic “Winter Warmer” or a beer that has an alcohol level that causes a “warming” feeling on sipping and drinking. This is an Old Ale or Strong Ale made in the tradition of UK brewers for centuries. We have used strictly “earthy” types of UK malted barley, UK strains of “grassy” flavoring and aroma hops, and our house strain of British Ale yeast in brewing and fermenting this beer. Also note the slight haze we have retained in the beer. That is because we avoid filtration, a process that can remove some of the complex flavors that make a big, malty beer more enjoyable. It is simply settled in the fermentation tank for months and then directly packaged for added flavor. Extensive aging is an investment for the Brewery in terms of tank space and at the same time an added value for enjoyment.

Bottle: The aroma is loaded with pineapple and some citrus. It pours a slightly hazy orange with a small creamy white head. The flavor starts with moderate pineapple and citrus. The finish has a hint of orange peel and faint sourness. Medium bodies with a soft mouthfeel. Overall it’s a solid beer, but Old Ale? No way.

Bottle at RnH Drink for Charity. Thanks to everyone who brought great beer to this. Dark orange with flat head and lace. Aroma of old oranges in cardboard boxes. Woody orange marmalade with sticky orange finish. Waxy texture. Maybe it had seen better days.

Bottle from Pizza Port Bottle Shop. Pours a clear golden color with low carbonation and a light white ring of head. Aroma is buttery diacetyl with lots of light malts and candy sugar. Flavor is very sweet with more malt, really reminding me of a thick and cloying Tripel. Some tones of caramel, toffee and pear on the finish. Pronounced note of English ale yeast lasts with each sip. Not too bad.

Cask at Stone. Hazy orange color. Big fluffy head shrinks to solid lace. Huge ring around the glass. Sweet nose. Caramel to fruit. Hints of sourness. Taste is big. Smooth and sweet caramel. Thick and chewy. Lace absolutly destroys the glass. Bitter finish.

22oz bottle from mr. chintawat.....pours a murky dark reddish caramel brown with a pretty thin soapy white head.... aroma of bready/toasty caramel malt, sugar, and dark fruit....flavors of sweet dark fruit and candied sugar. somewhat too cloying with a boozy finish. medium carbonation. just purely average.

On cask at Stone Bistro. Pours a clear orange/amber and creamy off-white head. Sweet malt, raisins, candy sugar, dried fruit, orange, caramel, and earthy hops. Very little carbonation. It’s alright.
