Commercial Description:
Old Tempest Ale is Lightning Brewery’s Winter Seasonal beer. This beer is a classic “Winter Warmer” or a beer that has an alcohol level that causes a “warming” feeling on sipping and drinking. This is an Old Ale or Strong Ale made in the tradition of UK brewers for centuries. We have used strictly “earthy” types of UK malted barley, UK strains of “grassy” flavoring and aroma hops, and our house strain of British Ale yeast in brewing and fermenting this beer. Also note the slight haze we have retained in the beer. That is because we avoid filtration, a process that can remove some of the complex flavors that make a big, malty beer more enjoyable. It is simply settled in the fermentation tank for months and then directly packaged for added flavor. Extensive aging is an investment for the Brewery in terms of tank space and at the same time an added value for enjoyment.

Thanks to IEBAILI for the bomber. Hazy orange with a small head. Aroma of candied orange and earth. As it gets a bit warmer I taste grassy hops and some pilsner malt sweetness. Fruity finish. Medium-heavy body.

On draft at Stone Bistro and Gardens. Arrived a clear medium dark amber with a large creamy head that left nice spotty lacing. Fruity sour aroma, orange liquer, woody notes, grapefruit zest and brown sugar. Flavor of overripe fruit and honey, earth and tannins, alcohol and spice, floral hops, hint of brandy and yellow currants. Fully body and lightly creamy carbonation.

Courtesy TheCheeseMan. Coloring is a lightly hazy, medium golden-orange. A small, creamy, off-white film settles to a swirly film, leaving behind minimal traces of lace. Aromas of sweet caramel, orange marmalade, bready yeast and vanilla make for a saccharine nose that seems foreign to my previous experiences with old ale. The flavor supports this, with overly sweet, dessert-like blend of citrus jam, mild spices, and sweet, pale caramel malts. The semi-full body is slightly cloying. Finishes fruity and short. Not bad, but not really my thing.

Bottle… VBWT2008… Cloudy golden ale with a small, creamy, white head. Decent retention. The nose is of orange marmalade along with gobs of caramel and hints of toffee, pear and apple. Full-bodied and chewy with modest carbonation. Big-time caramel and toffee flavors. Finishes sweet and fruity. TheCheeseMan rocks!

TheCheeseman strikes again! Pours a lightly cloudy dark amber, with almost no head. Smells very sweet, alot of molasses and dark fruit, bready yeast, and caramel malts galore. The flavor is definitely more on the sweet side, has a nice smoothness to it that you hope for in old ales. Really easy drinking for 9%, and had some nice sweet flavors. Caramel and dark fruits were the most prominent. Figs seemed to jump out at me. I liked this.

Bottle courtesy of Naven. Hate the beer, love the trader. This beer sucks. Hard to see this brewery surviving in such a competitive market (SoCal) if all their beers are this poor. This beer is a cross b/t a tripel, old ale, and a sour. No distinct flavors, just a jumbled, drain-pour of a mess.

22 oz bottle. Aromas were decent dried fruit and caramel. Flavor fell off quite a bit with some bandage and cardboard. Under that, I could pick up the old ale dustiness and molasses. Eh, not really impressed. I like some of their other stuff better.

Bottle from Bev4less in Santee. Pours a slightly hazy copper color with a one finger off-white head. The aroma is a bit tough to describe; perhaps plums, spiced oranges, caramel, and some murky earthiness. The flavor is more straightforward; sweet malts, vanilla, strawberries, and fresh cherries. The hops are well integrated as is the alcohol. The mouthfeel is light and silky smooth. The finish is long with sour cherries, and a bit of astringency. Overall: this is a very interesting ale that I am sure will remain interesting again and again. Recommended
