Commercial Description:
Old Tempest Ale is Lightning Brewery’s Winter Seasonal beer. This beer is a classic “Winter Warmer” or a beer that has an alcohol level that causes a “warming” feeling on sipping and drinking. This is an Old Ale or Strong Ale made in the tradition of UK brewers for centuries. We have used strictly “earthy” types of UK malted barley, UK strains of “grassy” flavoring and aroma hops, and our house strain of British Ale yeast in brewing and fermenting this beer. Also note the slight haze we have retained in the beer. That is because we avoid filtration, a process that can remove some of the complex flavors that make a big, malty beer more enjoyable. It is simply settled in the fermentation tank for months and then directly packaged for added flavor. Extensive aging is an investment for the Brewery in terms of tank space and at the same time an added value for enjoyment.

Tasted on tap at the Pizza Port Strong Ale Festival 12/6/2008. This old ale pours a medium orange gold color form the tap. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet with lots of orange and orange peel. A medium bodied old ale. The malts are fruity and sweet, with touch or orange. The hops are earthy and floral. Nice balance. Good carbonation. Very smooth tasting. Nice slightly sweet finish. The alcohol is nicely hidden. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Bottle purchased at O’Brien’s. Appearance is dark orange/ruby red hue, thin off-white head mostly retains, light lacing on the glass. Smell is syrupy sweet fruits (pears, peaches, raisins), cherries, some oaky wood, honey, and caramel malts. Taste is initially dominated by caramel malts and a range of fruit flavors (pears and raisins mostly), some sour and tart tones, opens to floral hops and spices, some wood, finishes with sweet malt. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, thick semi-viscous texture, moderate carbonation. Drinkability is moderate, a light and sweet version of the Old Ale style, wide range of fruits, low alcohol presence, i was quite pleased as this was my first beer from Lightning, looking forward to more from this brewery.

22 oz bottle from South Bay Drugs. Viewed as a hazed and vibrant orange that sits in the glass dense with minimum amount of head created. The nose is a mild blend of hop and sweetness with undeniable scent of strong alcohol detected. In the flavor, I find an up front sourness with a touch of sweetness in the background which in the end confuses me as to what flavors I am really tasting here. I have to go with my initial instincts and say there is a light notes of hops, honey, and flower nectar. Okay stuff and I liked how it held a thick palate.

On tap @ Hamiltons. Nice golden color. Aroma is an interesting mix of vanilla, spices and belgian yeast. Flavor is much of the same. I thought this tasted alot like a Belgian Triple. Very sweet. Definitely a sipper. I would like to see this in bottles because it would be interesting to see how this one tastes after a couple of years to mellow.
