Commercial Description:
This is the Lightning take on a smooth and freshening German style unfiltered wheat beer. The name hefeweizen means literally yeast (hefe) and white (weizen) beer. To be called a hefeweizen in Germany, the grain bill must have at least 50% malted wheat. This makes the process harder, but also makes for a smooth-tasting beer. We use 60% white wheat malt in our hefeweizen with the balance of the grain bill from imported “pilsnermalt.” We further encourage our Thunderweizen Ale to have a thirst-quenching finish by adding an amount of our own naturally produced lactic acid, and then smooth the beer with low temperature fermentation and cold storage prior to release.

Taster at the brewery in Poway. Pours a cloudy, golden orange body with a finger-width, dense, white head that dissipates quickly and leaves a moderate amount of lacing. Aroma is big on the banana bread and wheat with lots of yeast and spices. Flavor is similar. Starts with lots of wheat and banana bread before moving into a fruitcake middle and finishing with a bit of a spicy citrus. Fruity and malty aftertaste after a dry, yeasty finish. Light bodied, crisp, and refreshing. Overall, a solid beer all-around. Tasty.

On tap. Awesome Hefe. Nice cloudy golden color. Lots of aroma of banana and spices. Very reminiscent of Traditional German Hefe’s. Went great with my pot roast. This is my local brewery, so I fully support them. Viva la Poway.

This is a good hefe. Pours a hazy orange with white head. Bread, sweet malt, banana, a bit of sourness, clove, spice, and nutty wheat. Nice easy drinking beer. Well done.

On-tap at Breakwater. Pours cloudy orange, amber with a fluffy white head, good lace. Smells of banana and bread with some slight spice. Tastes about the same. Bready, malty, fruity and sweet. Medium body, good carbonation.

On draft at Main Tap. Not a bad brew for an American Hefe. Some clove on the aromas. Flavor was more wheat twang than anything else, but it was not horrible.

Draught at Stone. Pours with a cloudy orange body and a white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is clove, then vanilla then banana. Taste is strongly banana, then a bit of citrus acidity.
