On tap at Dusty’s Tap Room, Okemos. Murky orange-brown body, thin buff head. Leafy, tannic nose with toast and brown sugar notes. The body is a strong leafy hops tea that leads to a robust, sweet malty backbone with berries, brown sugar, and molasses. Leafy, bitter finish. Well-balanced, tasty, and original.

On tap at brewpub 8.20.09. Pours a dark dull brown with a great thick dense fine off-white froth. Aroma is light but rich whisky-like malt character, light hop edge, spicy with some roast. Flavor has an initial hop bite, chalky, chocolate, hard roast, medium sweet, on the bitter side. Medium/light bodied with average carbonation.

Aroma is beautiful: nuts malts chocolate. Appearance is deep brown, reddish tinge. Flavor is very nice; nuts choc toffee, bread. I guess the slight bread aroma is the only place I’m picking up rye. Fin sweet boozy slight bitter and spicy. Medium to slightly thick mouthfeel. Excellent.

Cask at Rattle N Hum. Deep brown pour. Thin tan head. The nose has a lot of fresh spicy rye malt and a nice fresh toasty malt character as well. Hops show a lot of nice spicy hoppiness as well. There is a touch of light cocoa/chocolate malt on the back. Fresh and bready with a lingering hoppy resinousness. I’d like to try this on tap as well, but it’s a very tasty brew.

Cask at rattle n hum during 2009 Cask Ale Festival. Pour is brown ruby. Spicy hops and subtle citrus hiding behind rich toasted malts, earthy, and caramel. Finishes bitter and long. Well played.

Dark brown with a small head. Aroma has some faint hops and roasted malts, clean. Flavor has some coffee which is not in the aroma. Bitter roast and some hops. Pretty good.

Cask at Rattle ’n’ Hum: Muddy deep brown maroon with a nice lacing tan head. Rich aroma- dense chocolaty rye malts, spicy piny hops (spruce) with a zesty Centennial presence. Creamy silky body. The flavor is a rich balance of spicy Centennial hops and dense rye chewiness providing a nice body. Mildly chocolaty with a caramelized husk note and some peppery spruce hoppiness. A very nice cask.
