ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA May 6, 2007 Draft, 2006 GTM. Nice cherry aroma; not as strong as the aroma on New Glarus Belgian red, but cherries still prevalent. Dark brown, cloudy with a little bit of a reddish hue. Large bubble, off-white head. Really tart flavor. Not too much wheat. In fact, couldn’t really tell it was there. Fairly dry. 11026 (1799), Alabama, USA Dec 23, 2006 Tap at MBG fest ’06. Reddish brown colored, no head. Pleasant cherry aroma, a bit of NyQuil but not horribly so. Medium to light bodied. Cherry flavored, a bit nutty, somewhat thin in finish. Decent, certainly more of a fruit beer than wheat. MIBRomeo (1962), Wisconsin, USA Aug 13, 2006 red, yellow, & brown hughes in a heavily cloudy spour w/ a small off white head. Extremly light aroma some light tart & sweet notes. Palate is crisp well coated and a nice light tart. Some tart cherry flavors, very mellow nicely sweet w/ a dry finish. Fairly mild, but pretty good. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA Jul 16, 2006 Also first beer of the MBG winterfest. Hugely dissapointed. Aroma and flavor very weak. Almost no sourness whatsoever, and the sourness I do get seems off. Very faint cherry in the finish otherwise very bland. Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Feb 26, 2006 On tap: Aroma is grainy caramel with some light tart cherry. Pours a hazy reddish-orange with a small off-white head. Flavor is a lot like the aroma. Lots of grainy caramel with some light tart cherry. Finishes with a moderate woodiness. Strong grainy presence is not appealing to me. First beer of the day at the MBG Winter Beer Festival and one of the ones I was looking most forward too. Very disappointing. BBB63 (4199), La Porte, Indiana, USA Jan 14, 2006 On tap at brewery and served in a 10 oz snifter: An unfiltered reddish brown color with a small off-white head and little lace. The aroma has a neat Belguim funk and sour quality with cherries, grainy malts, and grassy hops background. WOW, this taste a lot like a Flemish Sour (and why I sent in a correction about the style) with acidic cherry evenly blended with a mild malt and wheat background. A lot of Belgian yeast character throughout that really hits hard towards the finish. Even though it is not aged in wood, there is a clean oak tone about the finish as well. The feel is sharp and twangy with a dry finish and the alcohol is mostly hidden. What a wonderful expression of the brewers hard work, this is a real winner. If you like light to moderately sour brews, check this one out.
