(Bottle) Pours very dark brown with red hints. Pale nougat coloured head. The aroma is rather malty and yeasty with notes of dark caramel/burned sugar, sweaty liquorice candy, black currant, tart blackberries, green apples, rhubarb, lime peels, roses, lavender, rose pepper, ginger, white pepper, dry cardamom, sweet sticky raisins, wood, light basement and earth. The phenol notes stay within the frame. A whisper of melon and pineapple is also notable. The sweet caramelized malt and ester-ish fruit tone blends well with the earthy and wooden hints. Some alcohol in the background. The flavour is near sweet, light to medium bitter and light acidic with a dryish finish. Tones of liquorice, earth, wood, black currant, tart blackberries, green apples, spices, light caramel, sugar, tea and light horse blanket. The mouthfeel is the most confusing thing about this beer - massive malt struggles with dry brett. The malt profile is a bit too clean. The flavour ends with a mix of black currant, wood and liquorice. Medium to full bodied. The beer has a fantastic aroma, and a very interesting flavour profile, the only problem is the mouthfeel.

Lovely beer. Very dark. Spices, sweet and sour, lots of complex elements for slow sipping. Velvety, spicy. An edge of alcohol, brandy-like.

Dark brown pour with a red tint. Fruity raisin aroma with herbal notes. Bitter fruit flavor. Slightly sweet with an herbal rosemary finish. Very bitter on the end with alcohol.

Bottled (Thanks stoutlover72!). Hazy amber colour, not much head. Aroma is raisins, alcohol, yeast, mild fudge and some liquorice and herbs. Flavour is quite much the same along with quite much grassy notes. A rather nice Belgian Strong Ale.

murky brown pour, slight offwhite head. Nose is very herbal, slight fruit, some anise, some light cocoa. taste is herbal, savory, some licorice, the rosemary is evident, dark malt with some nice fig notes. a bit of booziness and wood at the end. Lost Abbey never ceases to amaze me with their incredibly interesting and tastey beer. Kudos

750ml bottle which cost me $10 from Hi-Time Wine Cellars. I shared this with a friend which was good given the strength. The color was dark brown with no head and no carbonation. Smells slightly sour, licorice, alcohol. It took awhile to taste the raisins but they are there. Another interesting beer from Lost Abbey. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 01-13-2008 05:41:51
