omhper (11027), Stockholm, Sweden Nov 17, 2008 Updated: Dec 1, 2008Bottled, thanks Marsblursi! Cloudy mahogany colour, small head. lactic raspberry aroma with some wood. Citric and medium bodied. Spritzy with lots of red berries. Fresheneing and complex where the buttery malt sweetness is well balanced by the citric lactic acidity. It also possesses a caramelly Belgian style yest character that stays in the background. Very drinkable, yet mindblowingly complex and tasty! beerguy101 (3608), Newark, California, USA Sep 11, 2008 Sampled on 9/11/2008. This sour ale pours a deep brown color from a corked 375ml bottle. Small to medium sized white/beige foamy head. The aroma is tart sour cherries, must and wood. A medium bodied sour ale. The malts are fruity and sweet. There is a whole lot of tartness, sourness, funk and wood going on here. It is nearly mouth puckering tart, but there is nice malty fruitiness to balance most of the tartness. This beer really has that Flanders/Rodenbach feel to it. More in the way the flavors mix and match than in any particular flavor. An awesome, absolutely world-class beer. Can’t wait to see how this one ages. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is tart with some wood. DrHomolka (643), Columbus, Ohio, USA Nov 20, 2008 Updated: Nov 27, 2008375ml bottle via MrBendo. Pours dark brown, opaque in the glass, with a foamy off-white head that has great lacing and retention. Incredibly pleasant aroma. Huge blast of cherries from feet away, funk, oaky vanilla, ripe fruits - plum, some acid. Lost Abbey house character is in this beer. I’m guessing Cuvee de Tomme or Red Poppy or both are in this beer, I have smelled this before. The soft funkiness is just beautiful. Brett presence is high and on the back end there is just a touch of an alcohol aroma. This thing is complex. Somehow there is actually a malt character still alive underneath all the other stuff which is fascinating and impressive. Taste is soft, smooth, slightly tart with delicious cherries and fruit. A bit more malty than the average sour beer. Certainly reminds me of Cuvee de Tomme, can’t say which one I like better. I drank one a few weeks ago, would have liked to have them back to back. This beer is quite lovely. As it warms the combination of lush Montmorency cherries and vanilla/oak is simply marvelous. This is certainly up there in its category right alongside Russian River’s best. I wish I had more of these as I think this will develop really nicely. Fantastic. JoeMcPhee (4061), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Sep 21, 2008 Big thanks to pilsnerpeter for sharing this one. Rich deep brown beer with a thin tan head. Aroma is really incredible. Rich sour aroma, sweet raisins, licorice, chocolate and soft oaky bourbony sweetness. There is also a nice earthy balsamic sweetness. Flavour is also really awesome. Sweet dark date/raisin malts earthy and a bit herbal with a soft cocoaish flavour on the back. Lightly fruity and acetic with a rich lactic tartness as well. Warming brings out even more complexity... soft apple, sweet oak and soft dark malts. Chewy and sweet yet light and tart at the same time. Wow... this is a masterpiece.
