Commercial Description:
From the French word "Garde" meaning something worth keeping, this Farmhouse Styled Ale is a most delicious companion to a loaf of freshly baked bread from the oven. Grab a seat on the porch, some soft cheese and a tree ripened apple from your grandmother's old orchard. Relax and watch the evening arrive as the afternoon sun is consumed by the illuminating moon over the gardens. We brewed Avant Garde for you, our friends and families. Here's to things worth guarding over. http://www.lostabbey.com

Picked up at the brewery in San Marcos. Pours out a dark golden color with a huge white head. Aroma is tart and slightly funky and a bit of spicy sweetness to it as well. As far as the taste of this thing goes I think I’ve found my first Lost Abbey beer I don’t like. Taste is bready and doughy with a bit of spice. Now I understand this is be expected in Biere de Garde but what I couldn’t get past was the awful flavor of vegetables. Very strange and very weird mix of bread and veggies that I didn’t like at all. Sorry.

Richmond "industry" gathering. Medium to dark gold, some orange as well. Aroma was quite biscuity with a hint of grapefruit citric and a floral note. Medium palate, with an earthy flavor, and a somewhat "cooked" vegetal finish. Pretty good, sounds worse in this description and with the score than it really was. Just not quite to my tastes. Happy to try it though.

Bottle thanks to Ty5592. Poured a hazy yellow-orange color with a white head. Aroma of yeast, citrus, and funk. Opens with a citrus bite, which leads into a yeasty-biscuit taste with undertones of light, fruity flavors. Slight funk taste in the finish. Dries out the palate with a nice bite, and keeps you coming back for the next sip. Big thanks to Ty for hooking me up with my first LA beer.

Pours hazy mahogany with a tall off-white head. Flavor and aroma reminded me of a dry fig and spiced character. Fruity and earthy towards the finish. This was a bit more balanced then the first two of their belgian beers i’d had, both a bit to bitter.

Pours a murky golden color into the snifter. Scents of grass, earthy tones, hops and yeast. A very interesting palate and mouthfeel. Notes of dough, spices, honey and some orange peel. My first selection of this style. This went extremely well with the traditional Thanksgiving fair. I would drink again with poultry and other hearty foods.

My first Biere de Garde--I am not certain how to judge this, so I’ll just describe the phenomena of drinking it. Scent of lime leaves, maybe lemongrass. Carbonation extreme. Medium head, deep yellow, almost ochre, liquid gurgling around the glass. Flavor is mild, dry, a touch of hazelnuts & coriander, definitely autumnal. The enjoyably subtle hops balance well with the butterscotch malt notes. Some tart touches create unexpected depth towards the end.

750 ml bottle shared at Houston Beer Tasting. Pours a cloudy amber with thin white head. Smell is bready malt. Taste of bread, similar to a dopplebock. Mouthfeel is medium with some carbonation.

First Official Houston Tasting. Pours a bright yellow with a small eggshell head. Aromas of orange peel, grains and bread. Flavor of apples, pie spices and some lightly spiced hops. Medium bodied mouthfeel with nice effervescence.
