Commercial Description:
From the French word "Garde" meaning something worth keeping, this Farmhouse Styled Ale is a most delicious companion to a loaf of freshly baked bread from the oven. Grab a seat on the porch, some soft cheese and a tree ripened apple from your grandmother's old orchard. Relax and watch the evening arrive as the afternoon sun is consumed by the illuminating moon over the gardens. We brewed Avant Garde for you, our friends and families. Here's to things worth guarding over. http://www.lostabbey.com

Golden bordering on copper with a strong, craggy head, leaving some ince lacing. Nose is fruity yeast, candied orange, light to medium caramel. A bit of tea comes through and hops linger way at the back. Like (nearly) everything else I’ve had from Lost Abbey, this tastes like what I imagine the textbook bier de garde would. Don’t misread that - its a good thing. Caramel & malt up front give way to some yeast and fruit. A hint of clove comes in, mixed with alcohol. The malt is almost German in it’s pronouncement. Notes of toffee appear towards the finish, always with slightly peppery restrained alcohol. That tea lingers in the back of the finish while fruits come up ever so slightly. Complex yet restrained. A style I need to spend more time exploring.

Amber color with a surprisingly small head. Aroma is a nice bready, biscuity mix with light summer fruit and yeast. Flavor is malty and pleasant - fresh bread, yeast, citrus, spices, and a nice bit of hop bite. Lively, tasty, but nowhere near some of the best Port/LA beers.

pours a cloudy orange color with a nice white pillowy head. Has a malty aroma with some cereal.Flavor is doughy and cereal like with a mild bitterness. The bitterness mellowed a bit more on the back end.

Bottle shared with Your Dark Lord and Landseer. Pours a hazy orange with a white head. Aroma of lemon, wheat malt, and clove. Moderate sweetness with flavors of belgian wheat malt, white pepper, and green apples. Yeasty finish with a sublte hint of alcohol. Nice beer with no flaws, but missing the "wow" factor that I was hoping for.

Murky orange with a fizzy off-white head. Aroma was yeasty with coriander/clove and fruit notes. Light body with thin feel in the mouth. Flavor was sweet but cut by the spices. Seemed like a carbonated fruit drink.

Bottle. Pours cloudy golden orange with a medium white head. Subtle aroma of light malt, yeast and citrus. Taste is citrus, bready malt, pepper and somewhat of a funky aftertaste. Can’t quite place it. Medium body. Interesting, but not my favorite from LA.

Cloudy and dandelion hued. Nose of cardamom and nutmeg with mandarin oranges. Quiet hint of vinegar and some honey sweetness. Tastes mildly of cinnamon toast and green apples. A touch of lemon juice lends a dry, farmhouse sensation. Bland fruitiness. Cayenne pepper in a red, tangy burst. Definitely a mite sour, and surprisingly non-descript. A strange smoked meat tone finishes. Thin palate with chemical qualities. Unimpressive and slightly difficult. Thanks Larry!
