axilla (962), New Providence, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 15, 2007 750 bottle shared with no one. Pour is a dark cherry colored body with a small, but solid, tan head. Sweet, malty aroma with raisins, vanilla, and brown sugar def’n present. The flavor’s not as sweet as the aroma let on. Everything seems to be buried under a blanket of farmhouse qualities and corn flakes. This is nice, I was expecting it to be too sweet. A little more of an alcohol warming in the finish than I’d expect from a 7%. As the beer continued to breathe, the alcohol flavor became more and more prominent until it dominated, and then pretty much killed the flavor. OldMrCrow (1179), Seattle, Washington, USA Nov 11, 2007 Fresh bottle.
Pours a deep red honey brown with a model light-tan head. Spicy aroma with an unexpected air of smoke. Flavor is quite dry, hops coming on heavy and early to cut through the cobweb and spice, chocolate on the finish.
The Abbey Dubbel is not my favorite style, but even within this style this beer is falling short for me. It simply doesn’t come together with anything like the grace I’ve experienced with the other beers from this brewery. JB175 (1654), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 11, 2007 Dark plum color with a lighter head. Aroma of raisin, prune, candy sugar. Flavor is sugary with a nice raisin-date-prune essence. Smooth feel a pretty good Dubbel. SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Nov 9, 2007 750 mL bottle - pours dark red with slight white head around the edges; thick aromas of dry fruit, brown sugar and obvious alcohol, which doesn’t come out much in the flavors; drinks creamy smooth; i served it too cold and the textures came out once it warmed slightly illinismitty (1790), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Nov 2, 2007 Updated: Nov 8, 2007Bottle from Zug4abby. Thanks, wherever you are these days. Pours a deep amber red with an off white head. Aggressive aroma of raisen, maple, and vanilla. Initial flavor of dark fruits and vanilla that transitions to flavors of yeast, grains, and figs. Lots of phenols on the finish, with a wisp of booziness. Not bad. Could use a little more heft in the malt department for my personal tastes. Wife loved it holdenn (1431), Chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 2, 2007 Updated: May 3, 2008Rated blind from "Better Know a Style: Abbey Dubbel" tasting. Pours a clear red brown with a smooth beige head. Aroma of red fruit, yeasty doughies. More red fruit in the flavor with pears, chocolate, roast and too much alcohol. 7/4/6/3/13 = 3.3
Rerate: I thought fruit and dough played alot better together. The alcohol did not seem to dominate as much as I had previously noted. Maybe it was a bit too warm at the dubbel tasting. 6/4/7/4/14 = 3.6 thegreat78 (32), San Marcos, California, USA Nov 2, 2007 Appears a dark amber with red edges when held to the light. The off white head slowly fades into a mild cap. Streaky lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of raisins, caramel, rum, vanilla, nougat, ripe fruit, brown sugar, with a nutty finish.
Taste is of the same as the aromas with brown sugar, nuts, caramel standing out to make for a very nice flavor.
Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied, boozy, rummy raisins, caramel, light cocoa, along with lightly smoked meat grazing along the tongue. xnoxhatex (1305), Grand Rapids/Chicago, Michigan, USA Oct 29, 2007 Rated blind from "Better Know a Style: Abbey Dubbel" tasting. Dark brown, some rubiness, small off-white creamy head. Aroma is doughy with alc. Flavor is yeasty, dough, red and dark fruit, and alc. Thin to medium body and creamy. Pretty nice.
