Commercial Description:
Ne Goeien is Flemish for "A Good One." We’d like to think this beer is exactly that. When we invited Hildegard Van Ostaden from Urthel to come brew with us at Port Brewing, we hoped the collaboration of our brewers and her passion for brewing would result in one fine beer. A simple Saison styled beer with firm bitterness is all she requested. From the beginning, it was easy to imagine this beer as Ne Goeien all the way.

Bottled. An unclear golden beer with a lazing off-white head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of wheat, lemon, and spices, medium notes of Belgian yeast and light notes of wheat. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of lemon, wheat, yeast, and lemon zest, as well as medium notes of spices, and light notes of coriander and malt, leading to a lightly bitter finish. I gave it 3.6 at the brewery and 3.1 in a blind tasting - this rating is sort of an average of the two.

Blind tasting at Papsø’s
Cloudy blond color. Strange aroma, lemony, a bit spicy, with some malt and plastic. Dry and lean mouthfeel, spicy wheat character, with too much final bitterness. Uninteresting.

Wow, this was worlds better than I expected it to be. Now that I look, I see it’s a collaboration, which I don’t find surprising, since I’ve yet to have an American Saison that’s anywhere near on-par with their European counterparts. This one fits that bill. Lovely zestiness with a great hops finish.

Bottle #11 at Papsø’s blindtasting. Hazy yellow coloured with a medium sized white ehad. Fruity aroma of spices and yeast with notes of barnyard and grass. Fruity flavour of spices, yeast and hops with notes of pine needles and bubble gum. Hoppy finish.

(Rating #2417)

My Bottom Line:
This fluffy and quaffable Saison presents citrusy thyme and spicy hops in an elegantly balanced flavor profile perfect for summer merriment.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the murky blond.
-There are gingery allusions at times as well.
-This could be a bit drier to fit my tastes in the style, but that’s just me.
-Malts don’t develop tons of character but the base cereal personality is still perceptible.
-The yeast signature is a tad dusty.

Bottle.

Nice murky pour with a small head. Aroma is spice and some sweetness and it taste balanced. Nice amount of spice and very smooth grains. A little dry and very good.
