Commercial Description:
This Farmhouse Ale traces its roots to the small rustic breweries of Southern Belgium. The word Saison comes to us from the French language and it means Season. Lightly spiced with Organic Ginger, Orange Peels, Black Pepper and Grains of Paradise, this brew promises to quench your thirst on the hottest Southern California days or wherever your travels may take you. Available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at select inspired locations.

Editor's note. This is a new incarnation of SPF 45, previously brewed at Pizza Port Solana Beach

3/11/2009: Lost Abbey Red Barn Ale is a really good Saison and is a super well-crafted example of the style, in my opinion. I like the hints of lemon, ginger, and sweat in aroma. The flavor is sweet, slightly sour and bitter with some spiciness and root-like flavor similar to what is typically found in a Fantome beer. Thave color is cloudy gold with a densely frothy beige head. There is a medium, sparking level of carbonation that works well for the style. Overall this beer is quite complex and intersting/hard to describe. I highly recommend it though!

750 mL corked and caged bottle (6.7% alc. by vol.) from IrishBoy and shared with Tmoney99 and alexsdad06. Thanks again Richard. I appreciate it! Rating #369 for this beer.

The beer poured a cloudy orange color with a thick, fluffy white head. The nose of the beer is citrusy (lemon, orange) and has some spice nuances also. The taste is a bit earthy and also has nice touches of the citrus and spice, maybe some corriander. This beer is very smooth and refreshing and makes for a very drinkable beer.

Tasty saison! Pours a slightly hazy yellow with white head. Orange peel, banana, lemon, pepper, honey, spice, and finish with a musty hop/funk flavor. I like it a lot.

750ml bottle courtesy of KingG, thanks! This pours a beautiful golden orange with a head that quickly subsided into a ring of white bubbles. The aroma is thick with spice but I can’t tell you what kind. There is also some orange peel type smell. The flavor has a faint candy quality and some other flavors I can’t put my finger on. There seems to a be a hop bitterness and this definitely has a rustic, farmhouse feel to it. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 06-11-2008 02:23:17

0.75 l bottle at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Deep golden color. Perfumed gently spicy aroma with orange, coriander, ginger, vanilla and honey. The flavor is fairly spicy with pepper, clove, coriander, orange, vanilla, grapefruit, lemon and meat broth. Initially sweetish but dryes up to spicy finish. Starts to taste too spicy after a while.

pours on tap @ papago a hazy to cloudy orange yellow-y gold. it’s topped with a fluffy white head which dumps a bunch of spotty lacing on the glass...

odd unexpected aroma of smoke... almost like a piece of charred oak with a wedge of lemon on it... i will assume that this is the savory yeast note that i get in belgian styles sometimes since it seems to dissipate as the brew warms... smells of flowers, yeast, lemon, dusty straw and something earthy and spicy.

the flavor shares the same characteristics... lots of savory yeast (almost bacon-y) with lemon skins and a touch of sourness, straw, dusty pale malt, grass/hay, a bit of woody/earthy funk and a very dry herbaceous finish. it turns rather quickly to mild and malty to to dry and almost parchingly bitter.

medium-ish body has some heft to it. the carbonation is soft and sudsy which builds up to get really creamy on the tongue.

i’ll have to give this another try from a bottle to figure out the savory smoky element...7/4/7/4/15/3.7

Style and Glass: Saison; tulip ABV, Volume & Calories: 6.7 % in 25.4 fl oz. estimated at 300 C Purchased at: Newportville Inn, Bristol, PA for $8.50 Aroma: peaches, fruit, hayfield, dirt, dust. Inviting, flowery aroma. Visuals: Beautiful packaging, though I feel similarly about religious iconography on my beer as I do about fish. I’d rather not see it right there, in particular. Hazy golden sunset, with a bright white cloud of a head. Lace is intricate. Taste: A very nicely done saison — tea, some spice, cloves, but what really sets this apart is the rather hoppy finish and depth. Some corn and wheat, but heavier than most of the saisons I’ve tried, which is a good thing as far as I’m concerned. Palate: Beginning is sweet and malty, middle is darker, and dries quickly, with a slightly bitter finish that lasts for about half a minute. A very nice example. Overall: This was my first ever Lost Abbey brew, but it certainly won’t be my last. If they can make a very enjoyable saison, I believe they can do just about anything. originally posted at: <a href="http://beercritic.wordpress.com/"&
