Commercial Description:
This Farmhouse Ale traces its roots to the small rustic breweries of Southern Belgium. The word Saison comes to us from the French language and it means Season. Lightly spiced with Organic Ginger, Orange Peels, Black Pepper and Grains of Paradise, this brew promises to quench your thirst on the hottest Southern California days or wherever your travels may take you. Available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at select inspired locations.

Editor's note. This is a new incarnation of SPF 45, previously brewed at Pizza Port Solana Beach

Bottle. Good spice aroma.Hazy orange pour. Very smooth taste with the orange and ginger being very evident. Peppery aftertaste. Would buy again but other Lost Abbey brews are more to my liking

750ml Was lucky to get a bottle of Red Barn from Taynor awhile back, thanks Dana! Red Barn is surprisingly clear with only the mildest of haziness through the goldenrod body. Carbonation rises quickly from every surface of the glass to the two finger cotton white head that formed on the pour. The head fell rather quickly to a half finger but left a meringue like middle. A good looking saison. This is brewed with ginger, orange peel, black pepper, and grains of paradise. The orange peel, ginger and grains of paradise greet the nose right off the bat in that order of intensity form most to least. There’s a slight grassy hoppiness that mingles well with the added spices. As it warms the black pepper spiciness comes forward where I didn’t notice at a colder temperature. This just smells like a thirst quencher. Flavor follows the lines of the aroma with everything more toned down but also seamless. Red Barn starts off with a mild groundlaying biscuity dry maltiness and is quickly overtaken by the spicing. The ginger, grains of paradise, and orange peel all come together mid palate but the only one left standing on the finish is the orange. This is where mild pepper and a mild grassy hoppiness join in and make for a delicious drying finish. The mouthfeel is good for the style. A bit below medium bodied with decent carbonation. If I had any complaint it would be that the carbonation could be a little more aggressive. The body tends to stick around too long ocassionally. Like the nose suggested, this is a thirst quencher delux. A hot Summer day and I would be all over this. I could polish off a couple bottles no problem while out on the deck hanging out under the umbrella. Another good beer from Lost Abbey and one of my favorite American made saisons. Doesn’t quite have the funk I enjoy so much from some Belgians but I’m digging it none-the-less. I’d pick up a few of these tonight if Lost Abbey distributed out this way. Thanks again Dana! 4/19/08

750ml courtesy of myself. Thank you, thank you. Pours slightly hazy yellow color with a large billowing, fluffy white head. Lots of lace down the glass. Smells light and malty, bready and yeasty. Not much sign of the spices on the nose. Tastes much the same as it smells with lots of light, crisp malts and some yeastiness. Good spices in the flavor and a nice touch of citrus as well. Definitely a great session brew. Medium bodied, vibrant but quickly fading carbonation.

Very smooth and extremely drinkable. Some nice spiciness with bits of pepper. Light citrus flavors, maybe orange and mandarin. I could drink this all night out of a tap.

750ml Bottle: Aroma of fruit, pepper, spices, yeast, and lemon. Poured orange/golden in color with a large, dense, rocky, off-white head that lasted throughout. Very sparkling. Very hazy. Almost opaque. Excellent lacing. Sweet flavor. Tastes of malts, fruit, spices, and pepper. Medium body. Creamy texture. Lively carbonation. Peppery finish.

Pours light golden with a large head. Aroma of spices and citrus. Nice sweetness with a solid bitterness to back it up. Very good saison.

750ml bottle. Poured a clear light orange color. Head was thick, rocky, and off white with good retention, but only a bit of lacing. The aroma was of subdued orange, yeasty bread dough, and mixed spices, none of which my nose accurately identified prospectively. Nice smell, though. Very attractive. Spicy, effervescent, and dry on the tongue. Delicious spices (again, none that I was good enough to pick out specifically without help form the label), orange, and bread dough graced the flavor. Very good beer. I’d happily drink this any day.

Doughy yeast aroma with some grassy and herbal hops apparent. Opaque yellow-blonde body is topped by a low white fine bubbled head that leaves some lace. Yeasty character in the flavour also with moderate bitterness that balances the sweet malts. Spices and grassy hop flavours in the aftertaste. Medium body with very strong carbonation. It almost seems like this fermented out far drier than intended. Sampled at Oakes’ Xmas tasting 2007.
