Commercial Description:
This Farmhouse Ale traces its roots to the small rustic breweries of Southern Belgium. The word Saison comes to us from the French language and it means Season. Lightly spiced with Organic Ginger, Orange Peels, Black Pepper and Grains of Paradise, this brew promises to quench your thirst on the hottest Southern California days or wherever your travels may take you. Available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at select inspired locations.

Editor's note. This is a new incarnation of SPF 45, previously brewed at Pizza Port Solana Beach

First aroma is corn - and that flavor continues throughout the sip. It has a nice breadlike flavor, with notes of apple and the said corn, and a mellow aftertaste. Pours a cloudy golden with a fluffy white head that sticks around a while.

Bottle. Cloudy orangey-brown with a thick white head. Aroma of candied oranges, pine, moss, thyme. Flavor is sweet, spicy and bitter, of hops, spiced apples and mulled cider. Really tasty.

tap at the brewery - Pours clear golden with a thin head and nice lacing. It has a very good yeast and citrus aroma. The flavor is sweet malt with yeast presence and some good citrus notes. I didn’t notice much of that farmhouse funk sometimes present in saisons. It’s finely carbonated and quite drinkable.

750 ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazy, yet clear orange yellow gold with a thick foamy white head. Aroma of pepper, orange peel, zesty lemon and spice. Taste is slightly spicy with hints of pepper, zesty lemon, orange peel and fresh yeast. Has a gingery finish. Quite enjoyable.

750 ml bottle

I picked this up at Bottleworks last weekend. Along with the Devotion I’m glad to have found it. If I could bribe Lost Abbey/Port Brewing into sending their beers eastwards along with Alesmith and Stone I would. When you get a chance to try this don’t miss out. It is not the most spectacular saison. However it is right up there with the best.

Aroma / Appearance - A one finger foamy head surged to the top of my tulip glass. Below was a cloudy yellowish orange liquid that swirled peacefully around the base. Oranges, coriander, lemon gelato and floral aspects form a very light but effective nose.

Flavor / Palate - Vanilla, orange cream and chives hit the senses first. Next comes dried apricots and mangos which are also evident in the finish. This is sessionable and perfect for when you want to take it easy. The bitterness at the end is enough to make you reach for more even when the bottle is empty. My only complaint (as such) is that at the price I paid I would be unlikely to choose this over some other cheaper alternatives.

Bottle thanks to dirty_martini. Cork pops with authority and reveals a nice aroma. Pours a lovely clear, golden color with rising bubbles and a thick, rocky white head that left nice lacing. Nice dry, fruity (mostly orange citrus) aroma with some spiciness peaking through. Begins sweet and slightly fruity, and then the yeastiness comes to the forefront along with a fruity, grainy (grains of paradise, perhaps?) presence that slowly fades on the tongue. Carbonation is just about what I expected. Really enjoyable, I liked it. Thanks a ton Larry.

Sampled at MN Ratebeer Winter Gathering in Maplewood, MN and supplied by joet. From a 22-oz bomber pours a clear golden pale brew with a thick and lumpy white head that has some excellent retention and lacing. Aroma of light bready malt, spiced yeast, a touch of black pepper, and some light ginger. Taste is medium bodied, a good balance of carbonation with flavors of bread and yeast character with a light pepper and citrus flavor. Finish is semi-dry with an aftertaste of spiced yeast and pepper. A pretty decent saison.
