Commercial Description:
This Farmhouse Ale traces its roots to the small rustic breweries of Southern Belgium. The word Saison comes to us from the French language and it means Season. Lightly spiced with Organic Ginger, Orange Peels, Black Pepper and Grains of Paradise, this brew promises to quench your thirst on the hottest Southern California days or wherever your travels may take you. Available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at select inspired locations.

Editor's note. This is a new incarnation of SPF 45, previously brewed at Pizza Port Solana Beach

The beer pours a hazy orange with hints of copper, the 750ml bottle is corked and caged with the head is portly and off white in color, the texture creamy, as it fades to nothingness, the lace provides a concealing sheet upon the glass. Nose is rich in spices, hints of peach, nice malt backing, crisp and fresh to the nose. Start is sweet and malty; the top is moderate in feel. Finish has a nice moderate acidity, hops are present and the fruity sweetness combines with the dry aftertaste, a great series of beers this "Lost Abbey”.

Bottle. My first Lost Abbey offering.

This is an exquisitely crafted beer. Sparkling gold with a vast and lovely near-white head. Yeasty aroma of banana and spices, rich mellow flavor, full and smooth, sweet malt atop orange peel and ginger. Fresh out of the fridge, it’s very good; as it warms to near room temperature it improves even more.

Exquisitely crafted and yet not quite to my taste, especially for the style. For my personal preferences it’s too sweet, too clove-and-banana, too buttery. It lacks the sort of rich funky house character of the best Belgian saisons, and lacks the bitter edge with which they close. Still, I can hardly fault the brewery for not catering to my personal idiosyncrasies. No question that this is a superb beer.

From a 750-ML bottle--poured a rich golden-copper body with an enormous fuzzy white head. Nose of yeast and piny hop resins. Floral and funky. Spicy and biting. Definite West Coast Belgian appeal to this not so balanced but extremely flavorful brew,

Burnished gold with some orange, slightly hazy, spritzy but tight foam; very herbaceous aroma and flavor on a bone dry, all most powdery frame. spices are very forward yet at the very least complimentary, they are a bit overwhelming though on top of the nearly sugar free malt base. Maybe some age will stitch this into a beauty, if some sweetness is eventually revealed to balance...

Rating #3800... Bottle... This beer rocks!... Cloudy golden ale with a mid-sized, creamy, white head. Good retention. The fruity, breadsy aroma offers notes of fresh-baked, whole grain bread, ripe orange, peach and black pepper. The flavor is of sweet bread, biscuit and ripe fruit up front. Soft, peppery bitterness on the backside. Full-bodied and creamy with medium carbonation. Crisp, lightly spiced, mildly bitter finish. Another great brew from the folks at Lost Abbey!

On tap at Port Brewing in San Marcos. Very Belgian beer, very spicy, dark yellow with very small head. Spices stay in your throat...interesting.

Autumn gold color with light fluffy head that lingers. Aroma is spicy citrus, ginger and clove mixed with yeast. Taste is solid saison with citrus and grassy notes, along with spices and pepper. Great mouthfeel and lingering finish.
