Commercial Description:
This Farmhouse Ale traces its roots to the small rustic breweries of Southern Belgium. The word Saison comes to us from the French language and it means Season. Lightly spiced with Organic Ginger, Orange Peels, Black Pepper and Grains of Paradise, this brew promises to quench your thirst on the hottest Southern California days or wherever your travels may take you. Available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at select inspired locations.

Editor's note. This is a new incarnation of SPF 45, previously brewed at Pizza Port Solana Beach

Cloudy orange-brown color with a thick rocky white head. Mild spice aromas, more earthy/grassy as opposed to lemon/citrus smells. Thick mouthfeel, less carbonation than most saisons I’ve had. Taste smooth, with an herbaceous quality and a slightly grassy finish well-complimented by a nice subtle hop presence. Not too spicy, and the description says "lightly spiced", so this is apparently what they were going for.

Aroma malty, earthy, hints of barn yard, fruit, and spices. Sweet taste with orange and black pepper flavor showing through nicely and finishing with a slightly dry bitterness. Very drinkable.

Bottle. Pours a red tinged golden colour with a small thin head. Nose is funky; spicey with fruit. Prickly barnyard flavor, reminded me greatly of La Chouffe. I did not get any heat from the peppers or ginger but the spicey sensation remained. Earthy and bready, this was a very decent saison.

Translucent then hazed, and buffed caramel copper in color with a soapy white head with a frothy presence on top. Distinguished aroma of sugared beets, orange seed, orange peel, citric zest, ragweed feeding off fence posts and caramel soaking copper. Alluring. Flavor array gives us hoppy melodies sweetened with lime and orange peel and husked with harvests of coriander. Mandarin gives an apricot hug while the toasted wheat gets glossed with caramel coatings, settling in like semi sweet wax. Marigolds meet lemon grass and slide out as clean and green, embodying grass stains and a citric, floral cleanser taking care of business. The palatary tour of it all is all out felicity for the mouth feel. Toasted grains caress citric hops and clean cotton sheets for a dry, bitter and altogether lovely finish. What a treat - thanks, tpkenned!

A great session beer, Ive had it on draft at the brewery and in bottle now. Pours a hazy light gold color with a medium white head. Spicy and fruity aroma of poached pear, ginger and orange. Flavor is sweet at first, that fades with notes of light malts, lots of yeast, and a slightly peppery bitter hops finish. Crisp and refreshing palate with lively carbonation, a good Saison worth a try.

Previously SPF 45...A nice beer from Port...had this on draft at Hamilton’s and in bottle. Interesting palate of spices, hops, and belgian yeast... all combine for a medium bodied, hazy golden colored, nice thirst quencher . . . a good saison for sure . . . Lost Abbey’s recent batch deserves a re-rate. Quote Tomme: "It’s been a work in progress, but I think we finally have what we’ve been looking for." I think he’s right.

[268-20070413] Bottle (c/o HogTownHarry, w/ him, blankboy, jerc, mds, tupalev). Hoppy citrus aroma mixed with a heavy crusted grain. Hazy, light orange brown body with a creamy bubbly white head. Hoppy flavour brings out apple and citrus grapefruit and light spices. Medium body. Nice hoppy beer with an interesting spicy bite.

ok, im going to start this rating by saying this is the best Saison made in america hands down! lightly cloudy orange with a small soapy white head. nose is lightly funky, citrus with a little pepper. Pretty much what i was expecting here. flavors show the citric notes of the orange peal and the funky yeast with tons of spice. nice spiced floral saison here with tons of great character. woody dryness on the finish is definately a bonus. very well integrated and definately worth a try for sasion lovers out there.
