Commercial Description:
This Farmhouse Ale traces its roots to the small rustic breweries of Southern Belgium. The word Saison comes to us from the French language and it means Season. Lightly spiced with Organic Ginger, Orange Peels, Black Pepper and Grains of Paradise, this brew promises to quench your thirst on the hottest Southern California days or wherever your travels may take you. Available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at select inspired locations.

Editor's note. This is a new incarnation of SPF 45, previously brewed at Pizza Port Solana Beach

On tap at O’Briens. Draft a hazy orange with no head. Smells of cloves, spices, and citrus. Tastes like a clove cigarrette smells. Hard to get used to at first but by the third sip, I started to enjoy the herbal flavor. Very interesting style. I liked it.

(Bottle) Pours a bit hazy, light amber. Spicy light fruity aroma with mostly orange, orange peel, all spice and black pepper. Smaller, more subtle spicy notes of clove, nutmeg, coriander and bay leaf. Maybe some other citrus tones as well. Spices and oranges in the flavour along with some sour berries and other subtle citric fruits. The spices are basically the same in the flavour as in the aroma. Light acid and a bit dry finish. Medium body.

Bottle shared with Blankboy, Hogtown Harry, Jerc, Mds, and Mabel, Harry’s bottle. Yeasty aroma, light malt, dusty. Medium hazy yellow, small white head. Spicy, yeasty, dry malt taste. Really complex . Seems right on style. Very good.

Bottle. Hazy golden yellow body with a small creamy white head. Pepper and illegible spice is first impression. Light hints of alcohol and lemon. Dry mildly alcoholic flavour, pepper. Pale malts. Average to medium palate is perfect for the beer. This is a very solid example of the style that would have probably stood out more on a night with fewer other great beers.

Bottle sampled on 12/2/06: Pours a hazy golden bronze with a frothy, nicely lacing white head. Sweet, bready oake biscuity Belgian malt aroma has some earthy green Belgian hops. Body starts full, sweet and pale biscuity malty with a good floral hoppy earthy black pepper spice for balance and a drier yeasty finish. Good authenticity and drinkability.

Candied fruit and spice nose with touches of citrus and ginger. Nice rounded mouthfeel that shows pepper and herb nmotes coming thru. Mildy biscuity and lingering spice finish.

Draft at O’Brien’s. Lots of fragrant herbs and spices in this orange small-headed brew. Aromas of ginger, corriander, and mint. Flavors were similar but stronger. Very spicy flavor with a very nice malt base. A very very yummy beer.

Bottle (750ml). Shared with blankboy, jerc, mabel, mds and tupalev - my bottle via trade with DarkElf - DarkElf+ Fest ’07!!. Slightly hazy yellow, smallish whiite head. Funky yeasty aroma, slightly peppery, sweetish malt. Solid saison aroma, sweet light fruit malt, heavy pungent spice and yeast. Thickish body, astringent, mild carbonation, bitter spicy finish - solid saison!
