Commercial Description:
Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent. Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart. The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.

2009 bottle from Perry’s in Livermore--I believe they charged me at over $30 for this 12.7oz bottle. Clear light brown with a thick ring of beige bubbles for a head and a tiny film--looks pretty flat. Agitation does render a 1/2 finger fine beige head, though still has relatively low retention. Pretty strong aroma of sour dark cherry skin and flesh, as well as a bit of lemon pulp. Dry oak and vanilla in the backend. This reminds me (though slightly) of cherry yogurt, though definitely more sour. Flavor adds some dark caramel and earthy notes. Still plenty sour--6/10. The finish is dry, yet the sourness turns my salivary glands on high. Light carbonation with a light to medium body. A very tasty beer, especially considering all the animosity towards LA lately. I dunno what they charged for it at the Lost Abbey, but at Perry’s, this beer would have been well over $60 for a 750--highway robbery, that is.

Flaske: Rødlig øl uden karbonering. Sur med en meget lille sødme i duften. Smagen er sur men med tydelig kirsebær hvis man smager efter. Syrligheden slår igennem til sidst.

Traded a bottle of 09 Dark Lord for this with some random guy at DLD, someone told me it was KP. Poured translucent orange/brown with a light head. Sweet and sour on the nose, a hint of funk as well. The flavor is tart and sour with some fruit but not over the top, it’s very nicely balanced. It finishes clean with some sourness lingering. Top notch beer, surprisingly well balanced for a sour.

bottle, at beer tasting in nørrebro bryghus. cloudy brown, no head. aroma is sour, cola nuts, real nice. flavor is very sour, slight vineagra, slight citrus. sourness is very well blended and balanced. A very good sour, that is not agressively sour or acid, but still have enough flavors to keep you interested.

’08 Bottle thanks to Hank1980!
Tannish-nut brown with a large, creamy head. Lambic nose with lots of citrus, mango, and cherry, also something odd, an earthy meat note. Loads of fruit in the flavor, really terrific blend, and not quite as tart . There’s still an odd note though, a really bitter spice and semi-rotting, and it comes through more here than the flavor. Very dry palate, moderately carbonted. Like this a lot. If it wasn’t so one-sided, this would score higher. As it is, this is a less-complex lambic, and as much fruit as there is, it could use more.
