Commercial Description:
Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent. Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart. The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.

Big thanks to BDR for opening this! Dark brown color with a thin head. Aroma of brown sugar and a little cherry. Lots of vanilla and oak flavors. Some cherry and sweet malt. A little chocolate. Very little sourness. Tasty, but depending on the bugs in here, it could either get sour as heck in a year or two, or stay the same solid beer.

Bottle and Draft at EBF. Pours a murky amber orange body with a light head. A sweet cherry aroma with some notes of oakiness and brettamycies. Flavor is wour cherries, woodiness, brett all the way to the end. Bottle. 2009 vintage. Pours a dark purple brown body with garnet hues and an off white thin lacing. Sour cherry vinous notes with a light woody cherry character. Low acidity with a lush cherry pit and skin. Light lactic acid with a low funkiness. A very nice brew. 4.1

12.7 oz bottle. Almost clear honey brown with an ivory, dishwater head. Nose of cherry preserves and cow pasture; funky candy. Buzzy carb with a soft, airy body. Taste is tart cherry, skins and earthy oak with a residual white pepper bite. Crisp and vibrant. Very good.

Noogfest ’08. The body was rusty brown and red. The aroma was tart cherries with some floral hints. The tate was cherries and farily sour. Overall, this was dry and woody.

Bottle from Lost Abbey Sinners Club
Pours maroon with a light thin filmy head, which is almost non-existant. Smell is sweet and tart with slightly oaky, cherry smells and almost spicy and cinnamon like. Taste is thin, watery, and lightly tart in the finish. Light acidity and very light vinegar like quality which is nice, but the flavor is equally mild with weak tart cherry flavor and sourness. Expected more and was too thinly flavored. Not impressed.

Red brown clouded pour with a very thin ivory head. Smell is sweet berries and sour cherries and cinnamon. Flavor is mild, balanced, and highly drinkable! The more I drink, the more subtle nuances that shine through. Not acidic, no vinegar is present - it is just so very drinkable. Ideal mouthfeel for the flavor - medium carbonation. Fruity and tart and wonderful overall.

Bottle at Noogfest Four-O. Pours cloudy orange with small beige head. The aroma is delicious sourness with some floral and fruity notes and some yeast. The flavor is an assertive sour with some spiciness and a pleasant fruit rind quality. It leaves an aftertaste that strangely reminds me of a meadow; I assume this is the poppy coming through. Pretty good stuff.
